Daniel Ponce
Rumba Pa' Gozar
Import CD (Seyer / Soundscape 2024), Re-Issued 2006
Editor's Pick:
This CD contains important material from two '80s releases by the
highly regarded percussionist Daniel Ponce: "New York Now"
and "Arawe" — both of which have been unavailable for a many years.
These sessions featured a who's who of musical giants: Paquito D'
Rivera, Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros, Orlando "Puntilla" Rios,
Bill Laswell, Ignacio Berroa, Barry Rogers, Andy Gonzalez, Nicky
Merrero, Yomo Toro, Papo Vázquez and many others. Ponce, along with
some other New York bands of that era like Conjunto Libre and the
Fort Apache Band, helped to pioneer a genre that freely experimented
with jazz and Afro-Cuban folkloric rhythmic traditions to create a
deep, rich, personal musical experience. That his work is now
available for us once more is surely something to celebrate.
Highly Recommended. (BP, 2006-06-27)
