Oye - Salsa Sabor Y Clave
CD (Oye Records 2005), Released 2005;
Editor's Pick:
Wow, here's a surprise instant hit!
L.A. based singer Phil Robinson, who's part Dominican and part
Puerto Rican (in case you were wondering) has produced a straight
ahead, hard-driving dance salsa number that should be an instant DJ
Pick. Robinson, who looks too young to have 30 years performing
under his belt, was born in the bronx, then moved to the Dominican
republic. He was the lead singer of Orquesta Yaré out of New Jersey
in the '70s.
Back in L.A. as lead vocalist Robinson's band opened for some big
names like Celia Cruz, Oscar D'Leon, Tito Nieves, Tito Puente, and
Johnny Pacheco. Not too shabby.
With tracks like "Barranquilla" and the vibes fueled "Fantasia,"
Robinson jams more fire and finesse into Oye - Salsa Sabor y Clave
than we've heard in a debut CD quite some time. Full swing
arrangements and a voice that cuts right through his bands
infectious zeal, Robinson adds nice touches hear and there — like
the flute accents used in "El Rebolu'" a track that is sure to keep
the dancers happy. Zero filler here.
This one, folks, is a must-have for those who can appreciate the
finer aspects of salsa.
Very Highly recommended. (BP, 2006-03-28)
