Jerry Gonzalez & Fort Apache Band
Rumba Buhaina - The Music Of Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers
CD (Random Chance 25), Released 2005;
Editor's Pick:
One of the great bands in jazz makes a comeback, with a tribute to
the great bandleader and drummer Art Blakey. Blakey's mark on jazz
covers forty years, countless bands and a bunch of the best writing
of the period. So where did the Gonzali go? They went for classics
from the Blakey book by Benny Golson and Wayne Shorter. That makes
sense (though a straight up tribute to Wayne makes even more sense);
Shorter's one of the preeminent composers of the 20th century; hey,
come to think of it, Wayne would sound great in the band. Anyway,
the recording works, and the Bros. Gonzalez are in good form, with
Gerry slicing his way through Along came Betty's hard changes. And
Andy opens Crisis with a deeply grooving montuno. Steve Berrios on
drums sounds like a percussion orchestra, keeping the band together.
This isn't a classic like Rumba Para Monk — the band doesn't sound
as familiar with the material--but it's pretty close.
Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2005-10-25)
