Harvie S.
Texas Rumba
CD (Zoho 200401), Released 2004;
Editor's Pick:
Recorded live at New York's Sweet Rhythm, Texas Rumba is the sort of
document that argues for the plurality of cultural experience that
New York offers. Harvie's been into latin music for a long time, and
he and his band move in and around it, playing the music straight,
or making reference to it. He's leading a jazz sextet, with trumpet,
saxophone, piano, percussion and drums, and though there are no big
names on the album, everyone plays well, and hard, with Daniel Kelly
on piano turning in articulate, modern solos.
Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2004-05-10)
