Francisco Aguabella
Cubacan
CD (CuBop 038), Released 2002;
Produced by Francisco Torres & Francisco Aguablla
Editor's Pick:
Veteran percussionist Francisco Aguabella returns with a smoker of a
Latin jazz-mambo release that very well may his best release to
date. Each finely crafted tune, which includes some classic covers
like "My Favorite Thing" (in which Aguabella plays the batá
drum), "Fiesta Mojo" and "Autumn Leaves" smokes, but the centerpiece
is the amazing version of "Agua Linpia Todo," the Aguabella
composition in which he wrote for Tito Puente in the `50s for
Puente's classic Dancemania album. It is spectacular.
If "Agua Linpia Todo" is the centerpiece, then "Tin Tin Deo," the
Aramo and Chano Pozo composition, is the icing on the cake. The
percussive blow-out is remarkable, and Aguabella has never sounded
better than right here.
Aguabella acknowledges his debt to Puente with his original
composition entitled "Mambo For Puente," a tune that has captured
the Puente fire.
With this release Aguabella seems to defy the effects of time. He
has indeed become one of our musical treasures.
Highly recommended. (BP, 2002-05-24)
