Chris Washburne And The Syotos Band
Paradise In Trouble
CD (Jazzheads 1142), Re-Issued 2003
Editor's Pick:
Mr. Washburne returns with a dazzling record that not only pushes
the envelope, it does away with it. This is the soundtrack of an
alternate universe, with sophisticated, yet fun to listen to
arrangements (not an easy thing to do), Paradise in Trouble is a
funky blend of bebop, Cubop, hip-hop and the kitchen sink.
Trombonist Washburne has a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology at Columbia
University. His band frequently plays in the New York clubs Smoke
and the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. He has toured with the Eddie Palmieri
orchestra. This boy ain't no slouch. This is his third Syotos Band
release. On this one, he has special guests Bobby Sanabria
(percussion on all tracks, drums on a few) and Renato Thoms on
bongos.
There are some strange and wonderful sounds coming out of this CD,
and it all makes sense in Washburne Land. Get it. It just may be the
best Latin jazz record to come out in a long while.
This one, folks, is Highly Recommended. (BP, 2003-07-21)
