The Jinga Quintet
A Day Gone By
Import CD (Fresh Sound 025), Released 2003;
Editor's Pick:
A smart, modern Latin jazz record by some of the best young
musicians on the New York scene. Avishai E. Cohen, an Israeli
trumpeter who's lighting up New York, joins Miguel Zenon on the
front line. The rhythm section includes Luis Perdomo on piano, the
group's leader Fernando Huergo on electric bass and Steve Langone on
drums. The material moves from a Latin version of Night and Day to
tunes that sound a bit like the timba-jazz that's sneaking out of
Havana and its environs. It's the sound of the present, not meant
for the radio, but for people who know good music.
