Bobby Sanabria
Bobby Sanabria & ¡Quarteto Aché!
CD (Zoho 200407), Released 2002;
Editor's Pick:
Bobby Sanabria is a man who straddles at least three worlds that I
am aware of: his original band, Ascención (a dozen or so members),
his Big Band (at least 20 members that I know of), and this here
band; ¡Quarteto Aché! (Uh, let me see...oh yes, 4 members).
This, folks, is a guy with his hands full.
With complete awareness of the history of Afro-Cuban music, jazz,
and their rich, complex marriage, Mr. Sanabria utilizes his
different bands to fully explore the past, with reverence, while
inching toward new territory through jazz.
This new production, utilizing the flexibility and intimacy of a
quartet format, begins and ends with Gizzy Gillespie bebop
compositions. The remaining seven tracks are original jazz
compositions where Mr. Sanabria and his crew allow themselves to
stretch out and work it stylistically.
These are rich, complex compostions that, at times, make references
the likes of Coltrane.
Just to be clear here, this is Mr. Sanabria's jazz band...it is not
an Afro-Cuban dance record. With that said, I hearby proclaim it,
highly
recommended. (BP, 2002-09-23)
