Review: Legendary vibraphonist Lionel Hampton worked with only a few
woman singers during his long career. One of them was Sylvia
Bennett. In 1987, they made one of Hampton's final records,
Sentimental Journey, which earned a Grammy nomination.
The newly released There Will Never Be Another You features more
songs from the Hampton-Bennett collaboration. Made in 1989, the
album features a mix of instrumental numbers that alternate with
selections featuring Bennett's vocals. There are cover tunes and
four original numbers written by Bennett and producer Hal S. Batt.
Batt gives the music a modern edge, whether the song is a swinging
big band number, a blues tune, or a Latin-flavored version of "Bill
Bailey." One of the original songs is "You Make My Heart Sing,"
which is followed by a dance remix of the song.
Hampton's playing is superb throughout the album. The
highlight, "Cookin' In The Kitchen (aka Jumpin' At The Mudhole), is
essentially a six-minute long solo. There's also a new swinging
version of Hampton's "Red Top." Other Hampton compositions on the CD
are the high-energy "Beulah's Boogie," and the gentle pop
tune "Someday."
He recorded his part in a home studio in Miami, which provided a
relaxed environment for him to work. As a result, he sounds loose
and free to improvise. Collaborator Bennett has a pleasant, resonant
voice. She's got a cabaret-style delivery that works especially well
on the big band tunes.
There is a second disc that features a 30-minute DVD that looks at
the Hampton-Bennett partnership. It features some good live
performance footage of Hampton and a behind-the-scenes look at the
making of the album.
