Luis Centeno Y Su Orquesta Melaza
Guaguanco De Caserio
CD (Melaza Records MR-OM-01), Released 2006;
Editor's Pick:
Ouch! This stuff has the deep swing all over it. The first track
thumps over a baritone sax, breaks into a reggaeton section, then
back into salsa dura, swinging with the beauty intrinsic to this
music. Willie Sotelo, the great arranger and pianist, is at the
piano, and Charlie Sierra runs the timbal, and the whole project,
recorded in Puerto Rico, is swift and elegant, with great
arrangements meant to get the dance floor full and moving. The horn
charts are fantastic, with the baritone anchoring the brass; it all
has a sway and sophistication that's rapidly vanishing. Here's the
real thing, salsa as euphoric, intelligent music. Take advantage.
Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2006-11-27)
