Luis Centeno Y Su Orquesta Melaza
Rumba Callejera
CD (Melaza Records 65310), Released 2004;
Editor's Pick:
Wow, here's a terrific hard salsa dura CD led by singer/director
Luis Centeno. On the best tracks, as on the cover track "Rumba
Callejera" and the swinging "A Luchar," Centeno's reminiscent in
style of, say, early Oscar D'Leon sporting a killer coro with a
nasal, uptempo ready-for-anything attitude.
Most of the compositions are original, but with a few classics
thrown in as successful hooks. There's the great "Plante Bandera" by
Tite Curet Alonso and Rubby Haddocks' "El Amor," for example.
More fine vocals provided Daniel Castillo and Martin Padilla. And a
great job by timbalero Frank "Cuco" Martinez who helps to make Rumba
Callejera rock from beginning to end.
DJ Alert. Highly Recommended. (BP, 2004-11-21)
