A review for last Avishai's CD

Ciao ciao Pietro

Article Courtesy AllAboutJazz.com

By Paul Olson
No bassist on the contemporary jazz scene is more technically able than Avishai Cohen, nor more immediately recognizable on a recording: his muscular, singing tone and richly melodic lines are unique. He’s also got one of the tightest trios on earth, and the countless gigs pianist Sam Barsh and drummer Mark Guiliana have played with Cohen are immediately audible on Continuo.
Cohen’s 2005 album At Home suffered from too many disparate styles and too many extra musicians augmenting the trio--it felt more like a Cohen compilation than a unified musical statement. There’s no lack of stylistic unity on Continuo, however, and only one extra musician is featured here: oud player Amos Hoffman, who appears on five on the ten tracks.
To his credit, Cohen’s attempting something altogether new on Continuo: a stylistic blend of western classical, Middle Eastern music (hence the presence of Hoffman’s oud), and improvisational jazz. “Nu Nu” epitomizes the concept with its stop-on-a-dime time changes, unison bass/piano lines, epic theme and virtuosic soloing (in this case by Cohen and Hoffman). The execution is above reproach--here and everywhere on the CD, the band plays with breathtaking precision.
Somehow, though, the aforementioned musical influences combine here to produce a strange and rather disagreeable hybrid that in its bombastic, grandiose themes resembles nothing so much as the worst sorts of instrumental Europop. This impression is heightened by arrangements that feature Barsh’s busy, mock-classical piano, an overuse of pomp-and-circumstance unison bass/piano accents (lots of dramatic, echoing “booms” in song after song), and the recording's hot, loud, no-dynamics mastering.
“One For Mark” is an uptempo piece that’s flawlessly played and ultimately pretty meaningless; with plenty of oud-strangling from Hoffman over Guiliana’s torrential drum cascades and wildly florid piano from Barsh, there’s no dearth of sound coming out of the speakers, but it’s all more precious than profound. Cohen’s solo here has a marvelous rhythmic buoyancy, but it can’t save the song. Unfortunately, “One For Mark” is no anomaly; it's perfectly typical of the tunes on Continuo.
“Samuel” is somewhat better. Its piano introduction has a practice-book sterility and it’s marred by more of those overdramatic bass/piano accents, but Cohen and Barsh are particularly sympathetically fused here and its final snare-roll groove is irresistible. The title track--which unfortunately appears last--is by far the best song, fuelled as it is by a propulsive and joyous Middle Eastern rhythmic structure of drums, percussion and hand claps. It’s more fun and less self-consciously important than anything that precedes it. The absence of Barsh’s piano on the song--despite the enormous, prowling presence here of Cohen’s electric six-string Marco--gives it a spaciousness that’s sadly missing elsewhere.
To their credit, the musicians play every song on Continuo with complete commitment and telepathic connectedness. If the results are gratingly soulless, it’s not due to a lack of sincerity on the part of the artists.

Hi all,
Last Robert Incelli's CD in on line on Radiovinilemania in Italy:

Let me know if you like it!!

Ciao ciao Pietro

Detalles, the third outing by Los Angeles-based bandleader/reedman Robert Incelli, pays homage to the music and persona of Venezuelan salsa superstar Oscar D'León. Himself a native of Venezuela, Incelli was mentored by D'León when he served as musical director for several years before relocating to California in pursuit of a solo career. The veteran salsero has been delighting hundreds of Latin music aficionados nightly for the past couple of years as leader of the house band at the landmark Cuban restaurant/nightclub Cuban Pete's in the southern California city of Anaheim, next to Disneyland. Incelli is a self-assured player with a soft-edged tone on wood-wind instruments, a marvelous sense of melody, and "mucho saber" (plenty of swing).
The icing on the cake is the fact that Incelli sings lead on all 11 tracks of this new production, doing justice to the reputation of having been part of Oscar D'León's orchestra, which is not an easy thing for anyone to do. He is also credited for all the transcriptions and arrangements on the project, playing all the saxophones and flute with skill and affection, in the company of a stellar ensemble of talented musicians, including Juan "Jason" Garcia (piano), René Camacho (bass), and Tito Carrión (percussion), among others. Favorite tracks include the opening 15-minute Oscar O'León Medley, the tasty merengue El Derecho de Nacer, and the upbeat salsa rhythms of Ven Morena and Rumba Rumbero. Excellent salsa party CD.

Hi all,

Jovino Santos: Brazilian Survival of the Hippest

Written by Bruce Gilman
Monday, 29 May 2006
Jovino Santos and Roda CariocaPianist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Jovino Santos Neto falls into that select group of musicians who have a massive dose of talent and an original vision. A self-professed disciple of Hermeto Pascoal, with whom he played for 15 years, Santos Neto displays a similar angularity, rhythmic asymmetry, and combination of the traditional and the revolutionary.
His music can be equally as dissonant, surprising, and intriguing, and like his mentor's, unfold with kaleidoscopic swirls of ongoing improvisation. Putting his fingers where his thoughts are, Santos Neto has the ability to send melodic lines in any direction at any moment, which may be a leftover of Hermeto's inevitable influence, but more truly indicates the spirit of his musical intuition and his identifiable compositional style. Santos Neto's capacity for harmonic fantasy and his quixotic sense of adventure are unmistakable throughout his new CD, Roda Carioca.
Santos Neto is a believer in giving as much creative freedom as is practical to his musicians, and as a consequence the quality of his work depends to some extent on his sidemen. On Roda Carioca, he is well served by players who, rather than splitting the seams of his tunes, enhance his original conception.
Rogério Botter Maio (acoustic bass) plays beautifully throughout, eschewing the impulse to overplay and fill in too many gaps, and Marcio Bahia (drums and zabumba), having an acute appreciation of the variety of sounds capable of being produced from a drum kit, is the soul of assertive drive.
Although these three have not recorded a trio album before, they are simpático and long-standing colleagues whose playing sits together seamlessly. Tingling with exuberant invention, Roda Carioca also makes judicious use of a number of soloists, with Hermeto himself being the most persuasive in that role.
The disc's unusual timbral palettes and its variety of forms - baião, coco, choro, and marcha rancho as well as odd-metered sambas - set out a radical program somewhat similar to music Santos Neto delves into on prior recordings. As wide-ranging in form and imaginative in content as they are, his earlier albums give only a partial account of his talents.
The tunes in this varied program display Santos Neto's incredible ear not only for instrumental blends, but also for angular designs, which is nowhere more evident than on the odd-metered opener "Estrela do Mar" (Starfish). Here, Rogério Botter Maio's bass solo, superbly inventive, is consistently lyrical, his dancing lines punctuated by percussive stabs by Marcio Bahia whose value as a sensitive painter of rhythmic sounds emerges. Voicings, colors, and polyrhythms are masterful.
Following it up is "Marfim" (Ivory), an unabashed baião with Santos Neto executing sinuous and unpredictable lines on both melodica and piano, and Marcio Bahia floating comfortably across bar divisions and jousting with Botter Maio while still providing exemplary group punctuation.
After those first two tunes, any other would seem to be anti-climatic, but each additional piece has reasons for further fascination. "Gente Boa" (Nice Folks) is a feast of penetrating playing by two masters of their instruments, Santos Neto and Hamilton de Holanda, who blur the boundaries between improvisation and composition.
Another pairing, that of two transcendent Brazilian lyricists, Joyce and Santos Neto, is one of the great exemplars in the art of intimate conversation. Their lacing up Moacir Santos's "Nanã," is an illustration of focused spontaneity. Says Joyce, "We did it all live, of course, as it should be, and had great fun. The trio was amazing; it was a real joy to work and interplay with them."
On "Festa de Erê" (Children's Party), a samba in 3/4, Santos Neto produces driving keyboard excitement, letting his fingers and feet dictate colors, and projecting notes with pinpoint velocity. Harmonically shrewd and rhythmically daring, this tune is virtually an aural drama on its own terms.
One of the most memorable and impressive tracks is "Coco na Roda" (Coco in the Circle), Santos Neto's tribute to Jackson do Pandeiro, which acquires instrumental texture not only from its multi-tracked flutes and accordion, but also Fabio Pascoal's percussion contributing so much to the rhythmic depth and complexity of the tune. Botter Maio and Bahia are hand in glove on "Homeopatia" (Homeopathy). Their anticipation of each others' moves marry tension to an inexorable flow giving the dialogue between piano and rhythm section a balanced mixture of the prepared and the extemporized.
Juvenal is Hermeto's nickname for Jovino. Grumari is Jovino's favorite beach in Rio. "Juvenal no Grumari" (Juvenal in Grumari) is a 7/4 theme that Hermeto used for exchanging a string of solos at rehearsals for O Grupo, raising then relaxing tension while constantly building momentum and placing soloists under pressure.(1)
On Roda Carioca, Hermeto, demonstrating his ability to build detailed, thematically linked solos from sounds beyond the scope of convention (a gum wrapper, a euphonium mouthpiece, a glass of water, a melodica), works out his ideas and develops them (joking with quotes) into a logical whole, making this a performance to put nearly all others in the shade.
Guitar player Marcos Amorim, whose gift for lyric invention, his lines seeking out unusual harmonic nuances, brings a lithe elegance to "Rancho Azul" (Blue Ranch). With its dreamy groove, insinuating minor mode, and underlining rhythm derived from syncopated marching band traditions, this arrangement, sustains an infectious flow with sparkling detail.
Inspired by J.S. Bach, the choro "Bach-te-vi" is a superb demonstration of Brazil's young lion of the harmonica, Gabriel Grossi. Alternating reverie with passion, Grossi brings knife-edged clarity to each phrase in focused bursts of melody. Cementing it all together is the ESP-like rhythm section whose inquisitive spirit and risk-taking provides a constant source of heat.
"Cerca do Macaco" (The Monkey Fence) is a feisty, tight trio performance named after the site of the Palmares quilombo and packed with musical empathy.(2) Botter Maio, a bass player who reads his colleagues well, is smart as a whip, Bahia balances his work from whisper to shout with both taste and subtlety, and Santos Neto is, as always, unfussily virtuosic, aggressive without being bombastic. This is a trio in the truest sense of the term - like-minded musicians at work, each making important contributions to the whole.
All true musicians recognize performances of special magic and integrity. From the opening notes of Roda Carioca, the listener knows he is in for a memorable musical experience. Aside from the balance between compositions and their arrangements, there are standout trio and solo contributions throughout.
One of the disc's most absorbing features is hearing those inimitable harmonic fingerprints that define Santos Neto's musical personality not only the vast imagination he possesses, but also the effortless technique at his disposal.
Beautifully crafted and expertly played, Roda Carioca reveals a complete artist - composer, arranger, soloist, multi-instrumentalist, and ensemble leader - whose artistic sensibility and poetic playing creates a hypnotic authority that haunts the memory.

Hi all,
Bomba's CD is on line on radiovinilemania in Italy:

Ciao ciao Pietro

‘Entre Sol Y Luz’ is a glorious follow-up to Bomba’s 2003 release ‘A Mi Me Gusta’ and their 2001 debut ‘lo que ¡bomba! te dá.  Having spent considerable time in Cuba with guest musicians Neraldo Duran Torriente, Raul Gomez Tabera and Livan Morejon Quian, Bomba’s Mario Allende, Chris Andrew and Rubim de Toledo draw heavily on the rich and fertile musical climate there. This new album is a testament to that
musical encounter, and reveals maturity from this Edmonton-based Latin band. Recorded live off the floor with very few overdubs, on this recording the band demonstrates sublime sophistication.
From the opening boisterous timba of Si, Canada to the beautiful danzon-style ballad Linda, to the fierce descarga of ¡Bulla!, to the folkloric Palo, Bomba maps the many styles and expressions possible
within this music and gives them a fresh treatment. All tunes are stunning examples of Andrew's stellar writing and the passionate musicianship.
Rich in tradition yet brimming with invention, this new album showcases one of the most thrilling Canadian contemporary music amalgams existing today. Bomba chronicle this musical journey with aplomb. Entre Sol y Luz represents the realization of a unique musical vision.

Byrd Pressley was born in Pittsburgh Pa. Traveled around the world after forming the Byrd Pressley Band. In the mid eighties was managed by Cissy Houstons (Whitney's Mother) and Toni Chambers for their Company Personal Touch Management.
He had several songs released in Europe that hit the UK charts. Working with Saxaphone Player Kim Waters and Piano Great Cyrus Chestnut both are well know national names in the Jazz world. In the late eighties, He toured Europe before coming to Caesars Pocono Resorts. In 1996, became Entertainment Manager for Caesars Resorts and currently perform with his band.
His new CD titled PS I Love You, was produced by Gary and Greg Grainger for Grainger Bros. Production. The title song features well known artist Kim Waters.
A New York based film director Margret Harris is currently doing a documentary on him which has been compiled over the last three years and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2005. The documentary is about his life, and how he got started in the music business, how he balanced the business end and the performing end of his duties for Caesars Pocono Resorts and fit the time to work on a CD.
He recently performed cuts from the CD at the Soul Cafe in New York City, as guest Artist for Shaila of Kiss FM New York City. Several stations are playing songs from the CD. He was interviewed by Jeff Gordon live on radio station Magic 93 of Northeastern Pennsylvania
Byrd Pressley is featured with URBAN NETWORK Magazine. Urban Network has been a critical resource of information for urban music industry executives, radio. This is a quote taken directly from their publication:
"Up and coming singer/songwriter Pressley evokes the solid soul-pop balladry of yore with this impressive indie entry.
His music is like Lionel Richie meets Christopher Cross in a rowboat on a still lake. 6 of the 8 songs like the title track (f/ Kim Waters on sax), "He Could Never Love You" and the sorrowful "I'm Lonely" are as heart-onsleeve as love songs come. But just to show he's not hopelessly whipped, Byrd also kicks the soulful "Show Me" and "Outta Here," a funky, drums-driven kiss-off."
Byrd's new CD has won two awards at Virginia's 1st Annual R&B Awards Show He was chosen Favorite Male Artist and Favorite Soul Single.
He is featured in a new movie titled No "One Will Ever Know" The new movie is being aired in Film Festivals around the world.
You can find stations playing Byrd Pressley by going to his web site www.byrdpressley.com, click on his site map and visit 365 live Radio. His interview with Mr. Rock of WUFO in Buffalo NY was just great to feel the love that they gave him. More updates will be coming soon with a New CD on the way.

Hi all,
Last Jose' Cornier's CD is online on Radiovinilemania in Italy:

I hope you enjoy it!!

Ciao ciao Pietro

Born on September 5, 1963, the son of a carpenter born and raised in Chicago's Humboldt Park community, went to Roberto Clemente HS, then after that got married had 3 daughters. During which I served in 3 branches of service; Navy, Marines (as a Hospital Corpsman), and as a U.S. Coast Guard. A Persian Gulf war veteran, and was disabled during the first war. Received numerous medals and awards. After my divorce I went into recording my music with help from people who believed in me. Was on the local news on ABC7 in Chicago in 1998 " One You Should know " with Harry Porterfield. Played in numerous events from the Taste of Chicago to Ex-Calibur, just to name a few. In January 2005, I went to St. Sabina and became a member under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Michael L. Pfleger, Paster of St. Sabina.

I've been playing the guitar since I guess when I first picked one up at the age of 8 from my brother, and it became a passion ever since. I also learned to play the piano, bass, percussions, etc..

I believe that music has an internal healing from our Lord, and when played in his presence, it releases not only healing, but an unexplainable unity of love, joy and hope in the presence of the people.

I hope you enjoy and share this music with friends and family, that's my intension.

Thank you for all your support!

luce come sussulti interiori. Giulio dice:"provo difficoltà a
scrivere di ciò che faccio…questo cd ha accompagnato la mia vita in
una fase che ha alternato il tragico al tragicomico…io non riesco a
parlare di musica. Riesco forse a farla."

Giulio risulta colto, versatile, creativo; meditato, soprattutto. Il
cd è concepito come un viaggio attorno al mondo: dall'Africa
di "Aria" al Flamenco di "Walking at the Alhambra", dal Samba ("Deep
down") al Bolero ("Passati presenti"), dall'Hip hop ("Piano &Bit")
al Be bop ("Just to let you know").
tecnicamente agile, Gilad Atzmon, sassofonista raffinato e

diversa complessità, come in "Pay me peanuts". Poi "Song for Carmelo

fugge via ("Stairway from Heaven", il sottotitolo), lontana eppure

Hi all,

here the new release of last Pedro's CD that you can listen on
Radiovinilemania:

http://www.vinilemania.net/vPEDROGIRAUDO.htm

Ciao ciao Pietro

May 2006

Desconsuelo, Pedro Giraudo (PGM) Remember the name Pedro Giraudo. At
least remember his nickname, Mr. Vivo, which is also the name of his
excellent 13-piece jazz band. If all else fails, play this
remarkable new CD once—you won't forget it. The experience is
exhilarating. Giraudo is a talent that deserves to emerge onto the
front ranks of the jazz scene. While he bills his music as Latin-
based, the influence is South American. He is originally from
Cordoba, Argentina, where Latin means tango, if it means anything.
But make no mistake; this is, without qualification, innovative and
exciting jazz. Two antecedents come to mind: Gerry Mulligan and
Charles Mingus. Both remade what a previous generation would have
called the big band sound, and both did it with lighter, tighter
forces and distinctive, modern charts. Giraudo picks up that torch
and runs with it. With a sound that is loose and relaxed, yet
arranged throughout, soloists often jump out of the pack, playfully
injecting their personality into the proceedings (Mingus). At other
times, the influence is clearly classical, the performances
virtuosic. And the music always swings (Mulligan). Giraudo loves to
produce sounds you don't expect; horns doubled with a bit of voice,
a percussive bass rumbling from the piano. A good bass player,
Giraudo is a bandleader of great promise. Desconsuelo is one of the
best jazz recordings of the year. (Jeffrey Hildt – Encore The
performing arts magazine)

Afro-Cuban music and other Latin forms carry on a tradition shared with mainstream jazz 50 and 60 years ago when it dominated America’s popular music scene: patrons loved to listen dance to it.
Through the years, veteran New York composer/bassist Harvie S found that whenever he got a chance to work with a Latin band it was nearly impossible for musicians and fans alike to not get caught up in the lilt and sway of the music

Hi all,
last Gabriel's CD is online or Radiovinilemania in Italy

Ciao ciao Pietro

Gabriel was born in El Paso TX and raised in Caracas Venezuela.
Later, he moved to Miami FL where he developed his career and
experience playing with the best session players and traveled the
world with named artists in the Latin, Brazilian, pop and jazz
genres.
Gaby Vivas has performed with such great jazz and latin musicians
like Sammy Figueroa, Othello Mollyneux, The legendary Tito Puente,
Juan Pablo Torres, Ira Sullivan, Melton Mustafa, Nestor Torres,
Patato Valdez, Antonio Adolfo and many more great musicians.
Gabriel Vivas has also performed and/or recorded with many great
latin pop artists like Shakira, Chayanne, Ilan Chester, Luis
Enrique, Raul DiBlasio, Fernanda Porto, Leo Gandelman among others

This new 2006 "Low registers" album is one of the best bass solo
albums coming out on this year. You will really enjoy listening to
this CD.

Track descriptions by Gabriel Vivas.
Track 1:
Down town, dedicated to down town Caracas, the groove is an odd
meter rhythm 5/8 traditional in Venezuelan culture but really
complex to play and/or to follow by people from other cultures. This
makes this track really interesting and unique, you'll never get
tired of listening to this tune. One massure of 5/4 is equal to two
massures of 5/8, find it and try to tap along with it if you can
ever…!
Track 2:
Sambo soul, just groove and let your soul feel it. Fretless bass
solo and many interesting details. "Sometimes few notes is what
makes it happen…"
Track 3:
Veranda, Vals inspired on Venezuelan vals, all acoustic track with a
Brazilian acoustic guitar player just greatly making it happen.
Beautiful, really rich in harmonies. Listen to the percussion too
lots of toys, lots of little tasty details…
Track 4:
My brother, dedicated to my brother is a hard grooving up tempo funk
with a five piece sax arrangement (two tenor, two alto saxes and a
baritone sax) also, a soprano sax on the bridge of the tune. The
bridge goes to a different more open pedal point section opposite to
the A section from where the tune is coming. Lots of fire, lots of
fun…
Track 5:
In peace, it's a solo piece written for the six string bass, very
melodic and full of chords harmonies. Any bass player and anybody
can enjoy listening to this tune unique and beautiful to execute.

Track 6:
Beach House, it's a latin-funk tune fun to record and to play life,
lots of fire and solos from everyone in the ensemble. "Beach house",
listen to the track and you'll see why the tune has that name,
that's what I see…
Track 7:
Beautifully loved, (amores de antaño) it's a tune inspired on the
standard "beautiful love" by Victor Young but with a Venezuelan
twist to it. It's a 5/8 odd meter, rhythm from Venezuelan folk
music. Beautiful to listen too, very melodic. This track is an
acoustic duo, piano and acoustic bass. I love this composition, I
hope you'll love it too…
Track 8:
Half the orange, this tune is a medium funk, with lots of percussion
and toys, lots of stuff are on this track including a bass clarinet,
soprano, etc… cool track! It's just groove with many surprises…
Track 9:
Significant memories, this track is a 7/4 ballad dedicated to my
early memories in Venezuela when I was a kid (7-10 years old) with
my parents, the trips, the summers, the laughs, my brothers,
unforgettable moments, unforgettable memories…

Hi all,
Bobby Rivas's CD is online on Radiovinilemania in Italy:

Ciao ciao Pietro

BOBBY RIVAS
Born in El Salvador, Central America , the son of a Nicaraguan father and Salvadorean mother, Bobby began at the young age of six to sing in school shows, church choirs, benefits, weddings, while devoting time to his other passion, playing goalkeeper in his beloved soccer football.
At age eleven, Bobby participated in the "Buscando Estrellas" festival, from which he emerged a finalist. At thirteen, he joined the Chucho Tovar Flores orchestra, in which he had the opportunity to travel and to relocate to Los Angeles, California.
In 1977 he joined the "LA Compañia" orchestra, where he was introduced to the Tropical Music scene in Los Angeles. In 1980, the promoter Roberto Rivera invited Bobby to form his own group. Bobby began to perform at the Hollywood Palladium, opening for such legends as El Gran Combo, Ruben Blades, Willie Colon, Machito, Celia Cruz, and others. It was here that his intense desire to sing Salsa was born. He united with his brother musicians from the barrio, Alex Acuña, Luis Conte, Yari More, Justo Almario and others, to form "The Los Angeles Salsa All Stars", a twenty piece super band famous for their Tuesday night descargas at the Peruvian Room.
It was here that Bobby quickly caught the attention of the media.
Newspapers, television, and radio stations praised Bobby for possessing one of the privileged voices, capable of great power and style, as well as sweetness. It was this sweetness that Bobby cultivated while interpreting romantic ballads and boleros, gaining entrance to an increasing number of
International Song Festivals, both as a singer and as a composer.
In 1986, Bobby took first prize in the OTI festival in Los Angeles. He accepted invitations to sing in the the Worlds great song festivals, such as The Curacao Song Festival, Holland Casino Sheveningeng, Colombia Festibuga, Peru Ancon Festival, and New Yorks' "Festival Latino de la Cancion".
Between festivals and concerts, Bobby was busy singing and producing music for television and films and commercials with such great producers as Bebu Silvetti, Jorge Calandrelli, Hector Garrido and others. He enjoyed great reward and acclaim for his work in "Las Palmas De Oro" in Mexico City, acting in the movie "Pesadilla En Las Vegas", starring Cornelio Reyna Jr. He is the voice of Sebastian in the Spanish version of "The Little Mermaid". Mr. Rivas has also shared the stage with the likes of Diego Verdaguer, Celia Cruz, Dyango, Braulio, Lucho Gatica, Antonio Prieto, Olga Guillot, Daniel Santos, Bobby Capo, Anacani, Marisela, Trigo Limpio, Angela Carrasco, Lupita Ferrer, Tierra, War and many others.
Bobby recorded an album with Ecuadorian composer, Enrique Izquieta, that was overseen by Nelson Ned. Other recordings followed, including "Paisajes", dedicated to the country of Bolivia, and "Salsa Merengue Bolivia", both of which saw Bobby performing in that country.
On stage, Bobby is a dynamic performer who holds satisfying the audience's need for entertainment as his number one responsibility. He is a master of combining the art of music with diversion. He has performed on stages around the world, and his shows are wildly in demand for a variety of venues including concert halls, festivals, casinos, clubs , hotels, social and corporate events.

===========================================
"Doble Sentido"-It features 10 original songs in the style of Salsa and Son, in which Mr. Rivas establishes his rich talent not only as a World Class and powerful sonero, but also as a brilliant songwriter. All the songs are catchy, irresistibly danceable, and breathtakingly performed by Bobby and his band. They feature lyrics that evoke images of romance, fantasy, nostalgia, and everyday reality.
==============================================  “La Nota de Un Rumbero”
11 songs which identify “la nota”- the feeling, the passion, the state of mind of Bobby Rivas.  This disc bursts open with  “Veneno”, a powerful number which would  be perferct as an opener, climax or closing of any event.
“El Catrin”  is a tribute to all the lady-killing salseros who would love for the song to be  about them.
“La Nota de un Rumbero”  is the passion and the heart of the true Salsero.
“5 Vecinas”  is a sexy and spicy song written by Bobby Rivas, and Jesus Alejandro “el Niño”, also the song’s arranger.  These four cuts are pure “Salsa Dura”.
For the lovers of Salsa Romantica, there are “Te Amo”, “Dime Quien”, and “Te lo Pido De
Rodillas”, a salsa remake of Grupo “Los Iracundos” hit song,  the only one in the set not written by Bobby Rivas.   Two luscious boleros ‘Bohemio por Amor” and “Mi ultimo Secreto” for the lovers complete this set.

Hi all,
Pete's debut CD is online on Radiovinilemania in Italy:

Ciao ciao Pietro

Mind Trip is the debut CD of trumpeter, percussionist and composer Pete Rodriguez, who has played with such music legends as Eddie Palmieri, Bebo Valdez, Celia Cruz, and Tito Puente, including performing on Tito Puente’s Grammy-winning album Mambo Birdland and the soon to be released Brian Lynch/Eddie Palmieri Project.

Kenny Barron says of Pete’s playing and compositions on Mind Trip:
“He possesses a full rich sound on both trumpet and flugelhorn and his technique is incredible. His articulation is precise.
[But] it is as a composer that his development is even more amazing. The melodies he writes are full of complex and quirky rhythms, making unusual dips and turns. Harmonically, his music tends to stay away from the usual II-V, II-V-I chord progression.
Each of the original compositions, of which there are eight, on this CD is a unique entity unto itself, full of surprises and strange twists and turns. However, one can be assured that Mr. Rodriguez does have a full grasp of the history of the jazz tradition. One need only listen to his reading of Mal Waldron’s beautiful ballad ‘Soul Eyes,’ or Herbie Hancock’s tone poem, ‘Dolphin Dance,’ to hear his respect and love for tradition.
I, for one, look forward to many more musical statements from this evolving young artist.”

Preview: Garden of Forbidden Fruit
By Steven Orkin
Consistent with Tropique's five previous releases, Garden of Forbidden Fruit once again shows that high-level musicianship can be accessible.
A wide palette of Latin and urban textures, Garden finds its seven members at the top of their collective game, achieving something very passionate and real. The record features Hedman (congas and percussion), Willie Martinez (timbales), Ron Monroe (bass), Misha Tisganov (piano), Alexei Tsiganov (vibes), Craig Rivers (Flute), and Sam Furnace (alto sax). The band is also joined by vocalists Ada Dyer, James D-Train Williams, Kendra Shank, and Dani Stevenson, plus Brad Mason (Flugelhorn), and Joe Gonzalez (bongos).
Garden blasts off with a very traditional sounding song, Rundadar Dance. It's a festive piece featuring an impressive solo by Rivers.
Hedman and vocalist Dyer combined forces to write the fresh sounding Closer. The texture and pace form an authentic urban flavor reminiscent of the late '60s and early '70s.
Guest vocalists really do shine on this record. James D-Train Williams brings a warm soulfulness to Angel of the Night, which he co-wrote with Hedman. Dani Stevenson does the same on the title track, which was also written by Hedman and Williams. Her smooth voice complements Monroe's slap bass to add a very modern flair to the piece.
Garden delivers everything its cover design promises; the romance of jazz in a blend of urban and island textures. It also delivers everything one would expect from such an accomplished band leader and sidemen; tasteful compositions that indulge the listener first.
In the garden of the music industry, these qualities may indeed be forbidden. But that won't stop Hedman and his band. The product is simply too good.

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Victor Hugo graduated from Universidad Central de Venezuela in Performing Arts. His mother was an actress and folklore singer and was a well known face in film and television. Whilst still a teenager, Victor starred in and directed several theatre musicals

He left his home to go to London to pursue a career in the arts, having won a scholarship from the Venezuelan government to study film making whilst continuing his work in music. Undeterred by the loss of his funding with political change at home, Victor continued in his musical career.

As one of the most accomplished and talented Latin musicians, Victor Hugo has lent his band to, and collaborated with many of the great names of Salsa. This impressive list of Salseros includes Grupo Niche, Kike Harvey, David Pabon, El Canario, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Júnior González, Luis Felipe Gonzalez, Tito Nieves, Mariano Civico, Palmieri, and Oscar D'Leon. His latest recordings are with Grammy award nominated ' Son de Cali' -from Cali-Colombia with whom he is presently recording his latest compositions.

A pioneer of Latin music in Europe, Victor founded and lead a number of high profile bands as well as making several forays into the world of Latin Pop, including Tequila with Island Records and more recently with the dance hit 'The Latin Thing' with Faze Records, both of which entered the Top 10. Victor's own compositions have been featured in films and advertising and his name has been associated with Bacardi, Colgate, Corona, Tequila El Cuervo amongst others.

Currently he has a further three projects being prepared -one for completion shortly in Cali, Colombia, one scheduled for completion in Cuba 'Salsa in English' and a third 'Salsa Pa America' !The musical! This is a collaborative project to be brought to fruition in London UK.

Victor, a charismatic and energetic performer, is first choice for international festivals, theatre events and celebrity parties, receiving superlative reviews wherever he goes. With his band, he performs for many of the rich and famous, throughout the world. Most recently, he completed a very successful tour of the Far East and has plans to return later this year for further performances and master classes.
You can also find Victor Hugo lecturing and giving workshops in Colleges and Universities all over Europe about "Latin America Music History" and the social and political influences of past and present on Latin American popular music; as his specialist subject to students of Latin America studies as well as other related studies. Today you are likely to find him performing his own compositions on stage anywhere in the world, as he says 'wherever the music takes me'

Hi all,
New Wendell Rivera CD is online on RadioVinilemania in Italy!!!

GREAT MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ciao ciao Pietro

Wendell Rivera is an award winning percussionist who grew up absorbing the sounds that emanated in and around Ponce, Puerto Rico. Rivera has performed Latin music and Jazz throughout the United States, Canada and the Caribbean Islands.
His first link to the music of the island was his grandfather, a performer of the traditional music of the island, the "Bomba and Plena."His self-taught skills and natural abilities on the conga drum quickly brought the caliber of his playing to a professional level. Rivera’s playing caught the ears of some of the tenured professors of Latin Music: Tito Gomez, Joe Rodriguez "La Terrifica", and Josie Leon, writer/composer and former singer from La Solucion Orchestra.
Later he matriculated into playing professionally with all three, an auspicious beginning, that set the tone for his 20-plus year career. His musical influences range from Israel "Cachao" Lopez (music and style) to Mongo Santamaria’s incorporation of North American jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms, Dizzy Gillispie, Tito Rodriguez, Machito and Tito Puente. Rivera now makes his home in Buffalo, New York where he has carved a niche in the Western New York music scene.
On June 7, 1996 Rivera released No Boundaries a production which featured eight selections of refined Latin jazz compositions providing insight into sounds that evolved from the rumba orchestras of the 1930's, the Cubop movement of the 1940's and the Latin jazz of today. No Boundaries quickly caught the attention of some of the top critics in the country.
"New York-based Puerto Rican percussionist-composer-band leader Wendell Rivera is living proof that while you can take the boy out of the tropics you can’t take the tropics out of the boy. His self-produced album is one of the season’s most enjoyable, full of catchy melodies, stylistic surprises, and rhythmic heat." — Mark Holston, Hispanic, Jazziz, and New York Latino magazine.
"Wendell puts together an ensemble of New York’s finest instrumentalists and together they deliver some of the freshest Latin jazz grooves around." — Rudolph Mangual, Latin Beat Magazine.
"Happy sax solos, pianistic string of pearls, Latin spirit and perfectionism, jazz individuality, grooves and percussion "con salsa" that will get you up and dancing." — Charlie Kiel, Author, Ethnomusicologist
Rivera’s latest production Portfolio, is a powerful and persuasive session loaded with engaging melodies, taut jazz soloing and molten Afro- Caribbean rhythms. This high energy mainstream date benefits from a strong shot of sabor tropical provided by legendary vocalist Yolanda Rivera, cuatro ace Yomo Toro, Nino Segarra and other celebrated guests.
Rivera also appears on Miki Howard’s "Can't Count Me Out" (Hush Records), the "Macarena" version of Chekere from Costa Rica, produced by Tony Johnson (Looney Tunes Records), "Content Under Pressure" and "Golden Palm" with Jeff Jarvis and "Just For You" with Jeff Hackworth.
While maintaining a strong commitment to Latin music, both notated and improvised along with jazz, Wendell taught Afro-Latin Music at the University of Buffalo. Rivera also served on the Board of Directors of Musicians United for Superior Education (MUSE), a not-for-profit organization that supports the arts as absolutely necessary for children, in terms of healthy physical, intellectual and emotional development. He also served on the Board of Directors for This Little House, an after-school program with an emphasis on the arts.

Hi all,
Last Chris Botti's CD is online on Radiovinilemania in Italy

FANTASTIC CD!!!!!

I hope you enjoy it!!!

Ciao ciao Pietro

Chris Botti - To Love Again
Trumpeter Chris Botti is a gifted instrumentalist, a talented composer, and a charismatic performer who--since the release of his first solo album in 1995--has created a series of recordings that have made him a virtual genre-of-one in the realm of contemporary jazz. Through his singular combination of lush atmos-pheres and thoughtful improvisations, Botti has earned both critical acclaim and mainstream appreciation.

Botti's latest album, To Love Again, a collection of pop jazz standards from the acclaimed trumpeter and nine superstar guest vocalists, is a worthy successor to Botti's last RIAA gold-certified album, When I Fall In Love.

To Love Again, which is available as both a traditional CD and as a Dual Disc, showcases Chris Botti's inimitable velvet tone and sublime trumpet phrasings on 13 newly recorded pop and jazz standards featuring nine stand-out vocal performances by some of the greatest singers in modern pop, jazz, and rock. After the first week of release the album debuted in the Billboard Top 200 in the #18 chart position promising great things. Billboard Magazine has predicted it could be “an even bigger hit” than it’s predecessor which remains in the Top Five of the Traditional Jazz Chart.

Joining Chris on To Love Again are guest vocalists Sting ("What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life?"), Paula Cole ("My One And Only Love"), Michael Bublé ("Let There Be Love"), Jill Scott ("Good Morning Heartache"), Paul Buchanan ("Are You Lonesome Tonight?"), Gladys Knight ("Lover Man"), Renee Olstead ("Pennies From Heaven"), Rosa Passos ("Here Comes That Rainy Day"), and, yes, that Steven Tyler (on Charlie Chaplin's "Smile").
Rounding out To Love Again are the instrumental tracks "What's New?" "I'll Be Seeing You," "Embraceable You," and "To Love Again." As on his last album, Chris Botti is joined once again by the London Session Orchestra, who provide lush tonal coloration to the album's arrangements.

The Dual Disc edition of To Love Again features exclusive behind-the-scenes footage on the "Making of" the album along with interviews and studio performances and more.
To Love Again follows the extraordinary success of Botti's groundbreaking last album, When I Fall In Love, which has sold more than 500,000 copies to-date.

Released on September 28, 2004, When I Fall In Love tapped into the record-buying public's desire for classic romantic jazz sounds, quickly hitting the #1 slot on both the Traditional Jazz albums sales chart and the Top Jazz overall album sales chart. When I Fall In Love debuted at #1 on the Traditional Jazz Album Sales chart and spent an incredible 17 weeks at #1 (including a spectacular 14 consecutive week run in the top slot). Botti's When I Fall In Love also spent four weeks as the #1 album on the Jazz Overall Album Sales chart.

Shortly after the album's release, When I Fall In Love jumped an astounding 109 spots--from #146 (week ending 11/14) to #37 (week ending 11/21) on the Top 200, the biggest single week's sales leap of any traditional jazz album recorded by an instrumental artist to be released in the SoundScan era.

Botti's association with Sting--who sings with Botti on both To Love Again and When I Fall In Love--dates back to 1999, when the trumpeter joined the pop legend's band as featured soloist on the "Brand New Day" tour, which lasted two-and-a-half years. Veteran of both the contemporary jazz world and mainstream pop studio scene, Botti has worked with Joni Mitchell, Natalie Merchant, and renowned film composer John Barry, among others. Film critic Rex Reed has called him "the sexiest trumpeter since Chet Baker." Botti joined Paul Simon's band in 1990, where he remained for the next five years, and, in 1995, he recorded his solo debut, First Wish. After scoring the 1996 film "Caught," Botti returned in 1997 with his second LP, Midnight Without You, which was followed by Slowing Down the World two years later. His 2002 watershed album, Night Sessions, peaked at #2 on the Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart while his seasonal collection, December, released the same year, hit #7 on the same chart.

Released in September 2003, A Thousand Kisses Deep entered at #20 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and hit the #3 position on the Contemporary Jazz chart.

About The Artist
Chris Botti is a native of Oregon who was born in Portland and grew up in Corvallis. His earliest musical influence was his mother, a classically trained pianist and part-time piano teacher. "I can't really sit down and play a song on the piano," Chris admits. "But I know harmony, and generally I compose on the piano rather than on the trumpet." He pursued his music studies with a succession of outstanding teachers: David Friesen in the Northwest, Dave Baker in Indiana, and--following Botti's move to New York City in 1986--the late trumpet master Woody Shaw.

"After I came to New York," Chris recalls, "I realized I didn't want to be a jazz musician. I love improvising, but you really need to live the bebop tradition in order to play it. That kind of music--the kind that Woody Shaw, for example, played so brilliantly--just moves a little too quickly for me.

"The music that really inspired me as a teenager was more like Miles Davis playing ballads with the second Quintet. You know that spacey thing, when they broke down all the chords in the song? That band playing 'Stella By Starlight' is something very different from, say, Bud Powell playing the same tune.

"My music is more reined-in, because it's in a pop format. But this atmospheric quality is what I really loved about jazz, and I've tried to marry that feel to the textures and melodies you might hear on a record by Peter Gabriel or Bryan Ferry."

When Paul Simon set out on a 15-month world tour in 1990, Chris became a key sideman in a backing group that combined Brazilian and African players with New York session veterans like Randy Brecker, Richard Tee, and Steve Gadd. Botti's solo debut, First Wish, was released in 1995; his second effort, Midnight Without You (a collaboration with English ambient pop group the Blue Nile) appeared in 1997 and was followed by Slowing Down The World in 1999. The Academy Award-winning film composer John Barry cast Chris as the featured soloist in his orchestral score Playing By Heart; Chris himself composed and performed the score for the Robert M. Young film "Caught."

In the studio and on stage, Chris Botti worked with such leading singer-songwriters as Marc Cohn, Joni Mitchell and Natalie Merchant; as a sideman, he has appeared on dozens of albums, compilations and soundtracks. In 2000, Chris joined Sting for two years of roadwork, as the featured soloist with the latter's "Brand New Day" band. That tour culminated in Tuscany, where the concert was taped, later to become Sting's first live CD in 15 years. "Sting in Tuscany: All This Time" aired as a part of the A&E In Concert series, garnering six Emmy nominations in the process. The documentary was later released on DVD. Chris became a part of a dramatic and memorable performance on that fateful day in the fall, September 11, 2001.

Working with band mate and multi-instrumentalist Kipper, Chris's Columbia label debut Night Sessions--inspired by the sounds of the late-night European club scene--was written and recorded during a two and a half-month hiatus between Sting tours. The album became a breakthrough contemporary jazz hit upon its release in October 2001. A Columbia DVD, Night Sessions – Live In Concert, was issued in August 2002. Taped live at the historic El Rey Theater in Los Angeles, "Chris Botti and Friends" featured the trumpeter with his own expert road band plus guest appearances by Sting and Shawn Colvin.

In October 2002, Chris released the holiday theme album December. This 13-track collection combined joyful interpretations of seasonal standards ("Little Drummer Boy," "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing") with contemporary songs in the Christmas spirit, including Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and "Perfect Day" by Richard Marx. On the promotional trail in support of December, Botti appeared on "The Caroline Rhea Show" (WB network). He was invited to return the next day…then promptly hired as Rhea's on-air partner, chatting with the host at the start of every show and frequently sitting in with a house band led by bassist Tim LeFebvre. Before he knew it, it was May 2003 and Chris had been part of "The Caroline Rhea Show" for five months.

The end came not a moment too soon as Chris headed into the recording studio to record his next Columbia release

A Thousand Kisses Deep. On this CD, Chris started to show his affinity to the “classics”, recording a now renowned arrangement of the Miles Davis classic My Funny Valentine. The reaction to this performance – both on disc and live – made Chris realize his next album would do well to focus on the repertoire of the great American songbook.
When I Fall in Love was recorded in Los Angeles and London in 2004 and produced by veteran Bobby Colomby. Working with some of the most accomplished arrangers and orchestrators around it has been hailed as “an instant classic” by many and continues to sell well nearly a year after it’s release. Botti’s big break came when he was “discovered” by Oprah Winfrey, who quickly championed his artistry to her audience, presenting him on her show in November of 2004. Within a week of his performance he had sold more than 50,000 CD’s and has not stopped since - maintaining it’s top five presence on the charts all the while.

Botti has outdone himself with the release of his latest album: To Love Again. Employing nine of this era’s finest vocalists, relying on sublime orchestral arrangements, and once again under the direction of producer Bobby Colomby, this album has fulfilled the highest expectations. www.chrisbotti.com

The barriers between classical music, jazz, and indigenous Brazilian music have been obscured by Rio de Janeiro-born and Seattle-based pianist, flutist, and composer Jovino Santos Neto. A member of Hermeto Pascoal's legendary band from 1977 to 1992, Santos Neto has continued to expand on his world music-influenced vocabulary. He built on his knowledge of Brazilian music during a stint with Airto Moreira and Flora Purim's group, Fourth World, from 1993 until 1997. He also worked with such artists as Mike Marshall, Richard Boukas, Celso Machado and Chitravina N. Ravikiran. He has recorded several albums with flutist Gary Stroutsos, including the Native American-influenced People of the Willows in 2000. He toured Europe in 1994 with Swiss cellist David Pezzoti. Santos Neto's 1997 debut solo album, Caboclo, featuring his compositions with the accompaniment of quartet members Hans Teuber (saxophones, flute), Chuck Deardorf (bass) and Mark Ivester (drums), was followed by Ao Vivo em Olympia in 2000 (with the addition of percussionist Jeff Busch and Harvey Wainapel on saxes and clarinet) and by Canto do Rio in 2003. Canto do Rio was commissioned by Chamber Music America's New Works program and was nominated for a 2004 Latin Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album. He also received commissions by the IAJE and ASCAP, Jack Straw Foundation, Seattle Arts Commission, Artist Trust and Meet the Composer. Jovino was the recipient of a Golden Ear Award as the Best Jazz Instrumentalist of the Pacific Northwest in 2004.

Studying classical piano from the age of 12,
Santos Neto moved to Beatles and Rolling Stones-influenced pop by his 15th birthday. He began to focus on jazz while studying biology at McGill University in Montreal. Invited to tour Brazil with Hermeto Pascoal in 1977, Santos Neto remained an important part of the Brazilian multi-instrumentalist's band for 15 years, co-producing six albums, including Festa dos Deuses, which received a Sharp Prize as Best Instrumental Album in 1992, and archiving thousands of Pascoal's compositions. Relocating to the United States in 1993 after performing on Sergio Mendes's Grammy award-winning world music album, Brasileiro, Santos Neto studied conducting at the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, where he continues to teach piano, composition, and jazz ensemble. He gives lectures and workshops on Brazilian music worldwide and continues to collaborate with his long time mentor Hermeto Pascoal as the music director of the Hermeto Pascoal Big Band. He is a member of the IAJE, Chamber Music America, NARAS, LARAS and the Seattle Composers Alliance

Ciao ciao Pietro

Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Sofia Koutsovitis is an active vocalist, composer and arranger. She is the leader of an octet that performs her own music, influenced by a wide variety of styles that range from jazz and experimental music to folkloric music from South America, specially Argentine, Brazilian and Peruvian.
After her professional singing debut at age 9 in the Teatro Colon Children’s Choir, Sofia later became a member of the internationally renowned National Youth Choir of Argentina, taking part of seven tours to South America, Europe and the USA. Subsequently attending the National Conservatory, she was part of several groups interpreting Renaissance, Baroque and Classical music in the most distinguished halls of Buenos Aires. Sofia also gained experience within the circles of experimental Avant-garde music. In 2001 she moved to Boston to pursue a Master's Degree in the Jazz Program at the New England Conservatory where she studied voice, improvisation and composition with jazz masters Danilo Perez, Dominique Eade, Charlie Banacos and Steve Lacy.
Now a resident of New York, Sofia is part of several projects that involve Jazz, experimental, Brazilian, Argentine, Afro-Peruvian and Afro-Colombian music. She is the lead vocalist of Alcatraz, a modern Afro-peruvian/jazz sextet. In AVANTRIO, Sofia joins Jorge Roeder in acoustic bass and Jorge Perez Albela in cajon in a distinctly contemporary take on traditional Creole and Afro-Peruvian music. She recently became a member of Folklore Urbano, a Colombian groove 12-piece band led by pianist/composer Pablo Mayor. And she is part of Aurea, new project led by pianist Geoffrey Keezer. Sofia is also collaborating with Spanish composer Montserrat Torras in a series of original pieces for solo voice and prerecorded vocal samples.
So far, Sofia Koutsovitis’ performances have found great critical success, including her appearances at Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center, Boston’s historic Jordan Hall, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and other top-tier jazz clubs like the Regattabar and Ryles. In 2004 she was invited to take part in the international ‘Betty Carter Jazz Ahead’ institute, a program designed to promote emerging jazz composers, and in 2005 her music was featured during a residency at the 2005 Aspen Jazz Academy, directed by Christian McBride
