Since we're on the subject, half of the French horn section at the Metropolitan
Opera (including one of the principals) is female. Most of the second violin
section is also female. At least half of the first violin section is comprised
of women. The tympanist in the Orpheus C.O. is a woman (she's one of the best
I've ever heard). There are two female bass players who are Associates in the
Met Orchestra (who also happen to be sisters). I don't quite understand the
premise of the original "statement".
