Hello David,
The list on the Four Seasons Orchestra website is from 2005 when I presented it
at the ASTA National Conference. It is woefully outdated by now. I updated my
list for the 2007 ASTA publication. The Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel Piano Quartet
was listed on the same line as her string quartets. It is very brief, listed as
Pn. Q instead of a full line. I was trying to fit a large article into a small
space. Naturally, and to my great dismay, I left out Sylvia Mann's many viola
pieces and her concerto for viola. I also left out Joan Tower's 2005 concerto
Purple Rhapsody. I recently heard it performed at the 2008 AVS Congress at ASU
in Tempe, Arizona.
The nature of repertoire lists is to go out-of-date almost instantly after
publication. I bailed on compiling the complete list of viola compositions by
women for my Doctorate. With more than 6,000 women composers I would still be
at it today. I will have to put the new and improved women viola composer list
on the Four Seasons Orchestra web site. I have to pay to have this done by our
web guy, so I don't want to do it too often.
Yours,
Carolyn Broe
