"Hoboken Tunes: Our Musical Heritage"
Opening Reception is Sunday July 29th
2pm to 5pm
Runs from July 29th through end of December
at
the Hoboken Historical Museum
1301 Hudson Street
201-656-2240
Description
Frank Sinatra may have put Hoboken on the world map, but his is not the
only musical career this town has fostered. Stephen Foster, for one,
lived here when he wrote "I Dream of Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair."
A few years after Sinatra, and just a few doors down from his childhood
home, another crooner, Jimmy Roselli rose to fame singing standards and
traditional Neapolitan songs in a style that reportedly made the
"wiseguys weep." The musical "Hair" was written here, and the number of
bands who made the leap to national fame after playing at Maxwell's in
the 1980s and '90s is too large to count.
The exhibit opens on Sunday, July 29, with a reception from 2 – 5 p.m.
Hoboken has played host to many diverse musical communities in its
150-plus years, including German social clubs, Irish music bands,
Italian vaudeville, salsa clubs and Club Zanzibar, which was a frequent
stop for jazz and R&B performers after their gigs at the Apollo Theater
in Harlem. Music thrived and evolved here among the many immigrant
communities. Blind Tom, an internationally famous piano sensation,
retired to Hoboken in the 1850s.
The exhibit traces the role of music in the cultural life of Hoboken,
as well as the contributions Hoboken's musicians have made to the
national music scene. Naturally, center stage is given to favorite son
Frank Sinatra, whose career might not have taken off as quickly if he
hadn't grown up so close to "New York, New York." His big break was
performing on Major Bowe's Amateur Hour radio show in New York in 1935
with his fellow singers in the "Hoboken Four."
But like many musicians and singers before and after him, Sinatra's
success was partly rooted in Hoboken's proximity to New York City,
where the popular music industry was centered before much of it shifted
to Hollywood in the 1930s and '40s. Before high-fidelity recording
technology, most music played on radio or in theaters was performed
live, Lewis says, and most popular music in the first half of this
century was published, performed and broadcast from New York City.
Until very recently, Hoboken was an affordable place for struggling
music-makers. In the 1960s, a pair of struggling actors, James Rado and
Gerome Ragni, holed up in a Hoboken apartment to write the book and
lyrics for the musical "Hair," which revolutionized the Broadway
musical with rock-and-roll spirit. Also in the '60s, a band called the
Insect Trust put out a record titled, "Hoboken Saturday Night," and
influenced the growing "underground" music scene.
In 1978, a popular restaurant for workers at the Maxwell House plant
was transformed in the evenings into a neighborhood spot for bands to
try out their new sounds in front of a hip, young audience. Outlasting
most music venues of its era, even in New York, Maxwell's continues to
offer up-and-coming bands a discerning audience to try out their new
music.
Hoboken's infrastructure as a factory town also supported the musical
industry. Guild guitars, cherished by top rock and folk guitarists,
were made here in the 1950s. The International Music Corporation
distributed hybrid instruments such as the "ukelin" (a cross between a
ukulele and violin) in the 1920s and '30s, from offices at 14th and
Bloomfield St. Affordable space made it possible for recording studio
Water Music (founded in 1980) and record label Bar None (founded in
1986) to put down roots here. Both are still in business, and between
them have boosted the careers of musicians such as The Bongos, Luka
Bloom, the dBs, the Delevantes, the Feelies, Freedy Johnson, The
Mary's, Matthew Sweet, Yo La Tengo and They Might Be Giants.
The exhibit will offer listening stations for visitors to sample music
of all kinds that had its roots in Hoboken. Fans of Frank Sinatra a
chance to see some rare memorabilia, including a microphone he once
used, and fans of the 1980s music scene can relive the glory days of
independent music through posters, album covers and even a few reunion
concerts. The exhibit will also pay homage to artists who have
performed at the city's Arts & Music Festivals over the past 13 years.
The performances at this year's Fall Arts & Music Festival will
coincide with the Museum's Exhibit and will include performances by The
Bongos (who will headline the festival this year), The Individuals,
Chris Stamey, Glenn Mercer (of The Feelies), The Health & Happiness
Show, The Amazing Incredibles and so much more. For more info call

Hello friends!
As most of you know, I am moving once again. Next month I will be
leaving Alaska (for a while, anyway) and moving to Maine to finish
school. This means that:
- my postal address is changing. I move out of my house in two
days, so please don't send anything else here. I don't know the new
address yet, but mail can always reach me through my mom: 108 Rte 30
Newfane VT 05345.
- my phone number is changing. The current phone number gets cut off
tomorrow. If you need to reach me in the next week or so (in other
words, before the wedding), I can be reached at Julia's parents'
house. E-mail me if you want that number.
- my e-mail is *not* changing. You can always reach me here, and I
check pretty regularly, even when I'm on the road. (That does not
necessarily mean that I will respond quickly - in that regard, I am
as bad as ever.)
Once I am settled in Maine, I will write you all again to give you
the new info.
Take care,
Jamez / Vermicious Knid

I just wanted to send this out. I'm doing a 360 mile open ocean sailboat race that starts at 1pm tomorrow. It should take us between four to five days to get to the finish line. It's the famous Marblehead to Halifax race that had it's 100 year anniversary in 2005. Information on the race at:
We are sailing across the Gulf of Maine, made famous by the book and film, A Perfect Storm. Yikes, I'm suddenly nervous.
My father helped John (the skipper and owner) and I get the boat up from NYC and we've been taking in the lovely town of Marblehead for the past two days as we arrived early yesterday afternoon. It was both terrific and scary sailing from Newport and in Cape Cod Bay.
We've installed a satellite transponder so that anyone with internet can actually track our progress on the following link which updates every hour.
Click on the Boat Selector button in the middle left side of the screen. Click on the last arrow or box that comes up entitled PHC-2 There should be eight or so boats listed. We are the Exquis (french for exquisite). As it stands, we are first on the list (because it is sorted alphabetically). If you check the box next to our boat name, you should see our Latitude and Longitude coordinates and average speed, as well as us as a blip on the map on your screen. You are able to track up to 10 boats at a time, so you would be able to see how well or badly we are doing against 9 other boats at a time. We are one of only four double hander crews and the smallest vessel in the entire race (30 foot Beneteau 1981) The skipper, John is a friend of mine and a fellow school teacher. Anyway, wish us luck.
Hi everyone,
I help organize a music festival down here in the ATL called The Other
Sound... it's largely inspired by WE Fest and it's in its third year.
Would love for some of you to make the trip down if you're able, it's
lots of fun!
This year we are expanding from 3 to 4 nights, Sept 6-9 at the Drunken
Unicorn, The EARL, Lenny's and ISP. We're also happy to have WE Fest
alums One Hand Loves the Other, Citified, Jeff Evans/Chickens and Pigs
and Mary O. Harrison joining our lineup this year! Other bands
confirmed so far include All Night Drug Prowling Wolves, Moresight,
Club Awesome, The Orphins and more TBA.

Thanks!

Politics of Confession are seeking individuals for music
collaboration.
Influences are listed on the Myspace page.
I hope to achieve a sound that can be performed minimalist in nature
in a live setting,ie: acoustic and/or electric guitars coupled with
a simple electronic setup.
So all individuals able to work the comp(and programs in that
dept),and/or guitars,please contact me.
I am located in Wilmington,NC,and since we would have to get
together regularly, please be from around this area, with all needed

Hi all,
I was planning on crashing at my partner's house for WEfest, but she ended
up landing a nice job for the summer (wahoo!) and she starts working in
Asheville on Friday of Memorial Day weekend, so ummm err I'm looking for a
couch/floor to lay on for a few days. I was planning on coming down on
Thursday night and staying through Sunday. Sorry this is so last minute and
if you are paying for your space, I'll be more than happy to chip in as
needed.
If worse comes to worse, I'll just drive down and see what happens, but
since I'm a planner of sorts, I like having a gameplan of some sort.
See ya'll soon.
Cheerio,
Ziggy

Those of you who have seen me perform are aware of the important part
deodorant plays in my live shows - after a concert I am generally a
sweaty messs, and without proper stank mitigation, I become a sweaty
stinky mess, which tends to adversely affect my sales because nobody
wants to come near my merch table. I've always viewed my Power Stick
as the "Fifth Worm" in the band, but unfortunately, due to a recent
apparent change in my body chemistry, it's lost its effectiveness,
and we just don't work well together any more.
However, after weeks of tryouts, I'm pleased to announce that I've
finally found a replacement: Speed Stick 24/7 Fresh Surge will be
making its live debut at MarsCon this weekend. Please take a moment
after my performance to stick your face in my armpit and welcome my
new scent to the band.
The Power Stick will be moving on to other projects, namely sitting at
the bottom of my trash can, unless I can sculpt the top of it so it
looks new and get Wal-Mart to take it back.
That's it from me - I've still got a buttload to do before MarsCon, and
of course I have this day job to work around, so it's time to brew the
coffee and get crackin'.
Thanks as always for your support - you guys kick so much ass that if
you were in ass-kicking competition, you'd, like...um...do well in it.
Yeah.

This Thursday, Feb 22, Jim Testa and I are going to be holding the first event in a new songwriting and ideas series in Williamsburg. I'll be performing at the first event along with two extremely talented songwriters, Ben Krieger (http://www.benkrieger.com) and Cameron Hull (http://www.cameronhull.com). Before the scheduled performers, from 7-8, we'll be holding something of an open mic. The first five musicians/reader/pedants/preachers to show up can have the stage for 10 minutes each. I hope you'll consider coming down to Stain and checking out the show and the series (see below for description). And if you'd like to perform - songs or something else - let us know!

Sets consist of 35-40 minutes of lyrically driven and timely songs, commentaries, readings, propaganda, sermons, exercises in public therapy, etc and beyond. Stain is appropriate for singer-songwriters, anti- and post-folksters, and rockers capable of performing with arrangements suitable for intimate and quieter spaces. The first hour, from 7-8, consists of “something of an open mic” for songwriters to try out their newest material. The first five performers to show up are welcomed to perform. Scheduled performances are slated for 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30.
Admission to bar/café is free. Stain serves a range of wines and beers and coffee at reasonable prices. There is a happy hour from 5-8, free wireless internet and, on the best days, an A+ cat. Stain is EASY to get to (10 minutes from Union Square). Take the L train to Grand Street (4th stop in Brooklyn) and walk west one block on Grand Street. Stain is on the left, 766 Grand Street, 718-387-7840.
Hey WE FESTers, that's right, the Milwaukees are giving away free
samplers. All you have to do is put your mailing address into our
mailing list and we will send you a free CD.
Don't worry, we won't send you a bunch of junk mail. Just a free CD.
You'll be added to our mailing list too, but by giving us your zipcode
we won't fill your inbox with a bunch of junk that isn't relevant.
Besides, you can always just unsubscribe if you want.
Anyway, head on over to the newly revitalized www.milwaukees.com. The
mailing list is right there on the right hand side.
While there, take a few minutes to poke around. We have lots of new
songs streaming there as well as some video clips of our rehearsals
for our new record, American Anthems vol. 1, which is due out in late
Spring.
Thanks,
the Milwaukees

I ate chicken teriyaki AND bathed my son tonight, so I smell like

Jim Testa and I are beginning a new songwriting showcase in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, starting on Feb 22. I thought that you all should know about it and, should you be coming through or already be in town, let us know if you'd like to play. Of course, you should all come by to our first show! It's going to be great to have a regular venue for strumming and muckraking.
To paraphrase "The Jerk":
This is the kind of spontaneous name recognition that
makes things happen! I am somebody!!!

This week the Jersey Beat podcast features new music from Grover Kent, Perfuma, Plastiq Passion, Exit Clov, Logjam, and Umberto, a few pop/punk blasts from the past, and the perfect tune to get you in the mood for holiday shopping, the Waitresses' "Christmas Wrapping."
