I went to the concert in Houston, Texas last night...it was
awesome! It got off to kind of a slow start - the website said
7:30, the tickets said 8, but the warm-up act (comic, very funny)
didn't come on until a little after 8...he performed for about 15
minutes or so, and then we waited for about 30 minutes or a little
more for Al to finally come out on stage. They did the same set
list they've done in other cities -
ANGRY WHITE BOY POLKA, PARTY AT THE LEPER COLONY,
YOUR HOROSCOPE FOR TODAY, A COMPLICATED SONG,
MELANIE,
One More Minute, DOG EAT DOG, It's All About The Pentiums,
WANNA B UR LOVR, TRASH DAY;
Medley: Money For Nothing / Beverly Hillbillies, Jerry Springer,
Jurassic Park, Free Delivery (My Heartburn Will Go On), EBAY,
THEME FROM ROCKY XIII, ODE TO A SUPERHERO, LASAGNA,
Pretty Fly For A Rabbi, MY BOLOGNA, Gump, Eat It;
Smells Like Nirvana, Amish Paradise, COUCH POTATO, Fat;
Encore: The Saga Begins, Yoda
- with a ton of smoke on the stage (I was in the 11th row - it was
a *lot* of smoke).... Everything was great; Al and the band were
really tight on the songs, and the video clips during costume
changes were highly entertaining. Al *did* make one slip-up - he
got lost during Melanie after the first verse. The band kept
playing, and Al suggested they skip that song because he didn't
really like it anyway *grin*....he managed to get back on with the
bridge, the last verse, and the ending repeating choruses. He
told the audience that he'd sing the 2nd verse after the concert in
the parking lot *lol*... Al said that that was probably the worst
mistake he'd made in the entire tour, and offered to play an
instant request to make up for it.....and he took the request from
the guitarist *grin* who chose One More Minute *laugh*... I'm
sure the rest of the concert was fairly standard, but since I hadn't
seen Al in concert before (not counting the "Running With
Scissors Tour" DVD), a lot of it was new for me.
Al was fabulous in Smells Like Nirvana - all the staging was
even better than in the video. After the line "I forgot, the next
verse", Al stopped and gave the audience a pointed look before
flopping around the stage, sans words...he came back in at
"Well, nevermind..." which caused no end of laughter from the
audience. Free Delivery was a new one for me (never heard that
before) and the band and Al did a really moving job with it *sniff,
wipes tear from eye*.... All kidding aside, I thought the bassist
did a great job playing the alto recorder on that song - I hadn't
realized such a great tone could come from that instrument (it's
an Irish Pennywhistle on the original song)....gonna have to learn
that part on my alto recorder! As for Money For Nothing / Beverly
Hillbillies, it was kinda bizarre to see the former and current Als
singing the same thing at the same time....wow....far out,
man....*grin* The guitarist played a little looser than on the
recording, but everything had a lot of personality in it.
Think that's it....sorry for the cross posts, all!
