I've been a disco fan for years, however there several disco songs I can't
stand. I use to love these songs, but something happened. Why do I hate these
disco songs now?
The following list below are popular disco songs according to everybody and I
agree however I tend to change the radio station when I hear them because they
have been giving too much airplay and the song has been killed. Too much
airplay can really kill a song and for the most part, the genre as well. The
comments are from a website I found and I added mine as well. I tend to agree
with this guy.
#10 - Lipps INC - Funky Town
It's difficult to classify a classic disco song as tacky, when it does sound
quite good on powerful sound system. Lipps Inc is no worse than any other disco
groups of the era. Mainstream lovers of disco like to hear it for the memories
it brings back. But true disco erudites who've been listening to disco way after
1980, in clubs or on their sound system at home would rather not hear this one.
"Top 40" radio stations choose this title when they want to play a disco song,
like if it was the only disco song ever produced. When radio stations play the
same disco songs again and again, they don't do the genre any good.
#9 Anita Ward - Ring My Bell
Bassline is good, Anita's voice too. Unfortunately, it's much too sweet, soft
and cutesy by today's standard. It makes a very good song to be used for
toddler's commercials, TV jingles or children's educational TV shows! The sound
engineering on this record and everything ever released on the Miami based TK
label is quite exceptional. "Don't drop my love" also from Anita the same year
is often played on internet radio stations focused on the disco genre, and
record collectors are throwing away "Ring my Bell" but not "Don't drop my love".
#8 - Village People - YMCA
The chorus is fun, Victor Willis' voice is cool and very soulful, the lyrics are
original and the horns sound real enthusiastic. It's not a bad song at all, it's
been overplayed and is often associated with tacky portrayals of the disco
period in movies and TV sitcoms. There are at least a handful of other memorable
classics by the Village People such as San Francisco, Fire Island, Hot Cop,
Women, etc, deserving more attention.
#7 Sister Sledge - We Are Family
Another hit from the famous songwriters and musicians Bernard Edwards and Nile
Rodgers of Chic. For strange reasons, vinyl record collectors of the disco era
don't care much about it, but "Lost in Music" and others lesser knows classics
from the late 70s by Sister Sledge are more likely to grace the shelves and get
airplay on specialized internet radio stations focused on disco and old school.
#6 Tramps - Disco Inferno
Disco Inferno is a gem typically reminiscent of the greatness of the Philly
Disco sound. But too much airplay almost killed it. For those old enough to
remember, about the same time came the movie "Towering Inferno". if you ever get
the chance to hear the live version performed by the Trammps themselves (yes,
there are still touring worldwide), you will get a totally new outlook on this
great classic. True fans of The Trammps are more into their early 70s, late 70s
and early 80s releases. If this song continues to get too much airplay, is just
like the chorus is sung on this disco, it will "Burn baby Burn." It's gonna
burn.
#5 Donna Summer - I Feel Love
I love Donna Summer, her voice is superb. But the synthesizers are nervewrecking
after a minute and the quality of the recording is so so. None the less, it has
paved the way for electronic dance music, in that respect, it is a classic!
Afficionados of electronic disco and true fans of Donna Summer are more likely
to own everything by Donna except "I Feel Love", "Hot Stuff" and "Bad Girl", not
because they're bad, but rather overplayed.
#4 A Taste of Honey - Boogie Oogie Oogie
It was fresh then, especially for its addictive bassline, other than this hit,
"A Taste of Honey" don't have any other potent disco songs under their belt. On
a positive note, other artists that covered this song make it quite enjoyable
i.e. 1998 Pure Sugar's "Delicious"!
#3 Chic - "Le Freak" and "Good Times"
Well crafted dance songs are timeless, they can be easily transposed and
reprised in our era without loosing their magic touch, and pretty much
everything by the team of Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers of Chic have been
reprised recently for TV commercials and funky and disco house records alike.
The problem is, most people aged 35 years or older are pretty tired of it (in
its original '78 version), period!
#2 The Emotions - Best of my love
It can be very tiring hearing "Best of my love" on every radio station, movie,
commercials etc. Too much airplay killed this song.
#1 Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive
Jesus Christ, somebody get me a gun quickly because I can't survive this song
for another second. No matter how they remix this song, techno version, house
version, salsa version etc etc. I can't stand it. The minute I hear the piano
opening of this song I scream "SHOOT ME, SHOOT ME NOW. PLEASE, SOMEBODY SHOOT
ME" I loved this song before, what the heck happened? TOO MUCH AIRPLAY, THAT'S
WHAT HAPPENED!!
