Man, I didn't even realize such groups existed here on a Yahoo
account! I thought Yahoo mail was only good for emailing lost college
buddies and collecting annoying spam mail. Turns out they are some
like minded folks out there who enjoy Western Swing music. I sing and
play fiddle in a five piece outfit known as The Cisco Playboys (from
Asheville, NC) and I think I'll stop by here a bit more. Our motto is:
"Too country for jazz, too jazz for country". We play roughly 2/3
Western Swing, 1/3 Cajun tunes and 1/3 various pre-homogenized
Nashville country tunes only our grandparents would recognize. I know
that equals 4/3 but who's counting anyway? This music is sorely under-
represented where I live so I would ask if you all know of any radio
shows broadcast over the internet "waves" that cater towards this kind
of music? -Peace-!

Barb Martin of Western Swing Monthly sends us tragic news of Mike O'Daniel's
death.
==================

Thank you to Larry and Gail Scott for keeping our office notified of
every
development in the tragic Mike O'Daniel accident. They were at the
lake
during the recovery operation, along with Mike's childhood friends and
family.

If you are not briefed on Mike's untimely passing, see
www.dallasnews.com.

Services are Wed Aug 2 at the Waxahachie, TX. Civic Center. Charles
Boshart
helped with the details. Albert Talley sent a note about visitation on
Tues
night Aug 1 at the funeral home from 6 - 8PM. Cindy Nix Wright
forwarded
details that
it is the Wayne Boze Funeral Home, 1826 W. Hwy 287, phone 972-923-2700
is
handling the arrangements. There were so many more folks who called
and
sent messages, thanks to everyone for keeping the pipeline of news
open.

I'm still bumping off of walls in disbelief. I still can't believe it.
He
leaves such a void. Mike indeed was smart, fun, funny, kind and
talented.
Always in our hearts.

Hurshul was an excellent fiddler and singer, always in the Bob Wills

enlisted
in the Air Force. He was assigned to the USO, playing at bases all

discharged New Year's Eve 1945 and immediately came home and got his
band
back together. They played 5 nights a week and had a radio show in
Enid.
His band played for years in Wynoka Saturday nights. And the place was
jumpin'!! He worked the Los Angeles circuit for a year.

Hurshul Clothier and the Oklahoma Travelers made quite a name for
themselves
and had a huge local following, a thousand folks a night attended their
dances. Over the years they worked with stars such as Lefty Frizzell,
Glen
Campbell, Roy and Dale, Bob Wills, many others. In 1972 he organized

I hope you had an opportunity to attend some of those shows at his

Below is the link to an excellent history of KVOO-AM,this 50,000 watt
"Voice of Oklahoma" saw such greats as Paul Harvey and of course Bob
Wills in its studios over the years. The station has now changed call
signs and at last report is broadcasting Talk Shows and
News.Signifigantly the last song played under the KVOO call letters
was appropriately enough Bob Wills "Take Me Back To Tulsa".

Thanks for the reply,Allen.I got to listen to the show during
lunchbreak at work and was fascinated to hear about the "Marty
Robins" effect at the Drive-in movies, where the patrons were honking
their horns, five minutes after Marty's song had played
on the film.It certainly brought back memories
of my childhood days as Marty could no no wrong
musically in that era of drive-in movies.

here is something the board members may find of interest:A very
concise and well written article that defines Western Swing and then
outlines the roots thereof, all this in the space of a few pages! The
autor is identified only as Leocthasme, but his writing style
indicates to me at least, that he is of that old school of
Journalism,that was taught to
write a fully informative article with the an eye towards treating
each word as if it cost a dollar!
In other words,a lot of information in a few pages:

Hello All,

I finally got a weekend off and was able to tune in over the net and
was delighted to hear Allen Bailey doing his show on air @
www.hppr.org.The show certainly lives up to its name -Western Swing
And Other Things as you not only hear plenty of Western Swing with the
likes of Milton Brown,Bob Wills etc, but as well plenty of the other
classic artists.I gave Allen a call on the 1-800 number and he was
kind enough to dedicate
a Hank Williams Sr. song (one of my favorites) "Long Gone Lonesome
Blues".This being but one example of of the Other Things" within the
play list.
Allen has that quality too rarely found in Radio these days.that
quality of seeming to come into the listener's home and paying a
visit.During this visit,Allen is able to tell his hosts quite a bit of
insight about the artist and his songs. One example early in the show
was the story behind Milton Brown, who until his untimely death in an
auto accident in 1936 was often considered the father of Western
Swing, even overshadowing Bob Wills in those formative years of WS.
I assure you this type of show which packs a lot of wonderful
information and music in a well formatted bundle is a real diamond
among the stones in this age of demographic consultant driven
programming found on so many other stations.

Lol Bruce!AN E.T.fan,that is wonderful! Now I am hoping that this
group gets more active in the 06 and that the messages are not as rare
as a "Rainbow at Midnight"In fact if any of you new members have "Half
A Mind" and have anything to share with the group or if you are
seeking any sort of information, why it is more welcome than a
"Filipino Baby"!Meanwhile here is yet another link,a Big Band database
that includes some of our favorites and along with several lesser
known bands that contributed to the emergence of Western Swing

http://nfo.net/usa/weswing.html

Now before any of you get "That Wild and Wicked Look In Your Eye"
"I'll Step Aside".

Lol, ah yes the modern day record store.I well recall the time I waded
into one of our local record stores in the hopes of locating any of the
classics on my list. The kid working there at the time had enough metal
hanging off of his face that if it was melted down I am sure one would
would have enough metal to build a Cadillac!I had my Stetson on and
this kid comes up behind me and says something to the effect that he
didn't know the rodeo was in town.I looked up and told him "Well thats
ok ,I didnt know the freak show was in town either!"

That sounds about right.

A few years ago the Light Crust Doughboys were in Amarillo doing a
"thing" with the Lone Star Ballet (it was really neat!) There was a
recording of the songs performed that we wanted to buy. We went to
the local music store that had advertised it. Couldn't find it of
course so asked the "kid" working there if he knew where it was.
Clueless. He asked us if they were "a new group." We told him "not
exactly new." We finally found it at the OTHER store and it was worth
the search.

Ah yes,but there we have it!I found out far long ago that there is
where Folk music came from, which is defined as Yankees trying to do
Country Music! What is even more comedic is one of our local
commercial FM stations that tries to put on a Classic Country show
on Sunday nights using Generation X DJ's.The few times I have had to
listen to this I have been introduced to some totally new artists
such as "Hark Williams","Lefty Frizzle","Ernest Tube","Kitty Walls"
and even a selection from the "Light Crest Doughboys".I am still
waiting for selections from "Bob Wells" though!Of Course if they do
play any "Bob wells" naturally I will also expect selections
from "Spad Collie" and "Peewee Kink"!--- In

Yep, you may be right about those yankee types....being east of you
and all.
I need to get hold of Roy and have him change the spellings of all
of these names. Roy does theater productions and all, but I don't
think he knows all that much about WEstern Swing.
God bless,
Allen
