I'm very excited by a band combining Hugh Hopper and David Cross! Cross has been
making some great music lately.
A name less familiar to What's Rattlin' readers will be Yumi Hara Cawkwell,
<http://www.yumiharacawkwell.co.uk/> and
<http://www.myspace.com/yumiharacawkwell>. She's a contemporary composer who has
worked with a number of new music groups, including pianocircus. I mention Yumi
because she's in collaborations with both David Cross and, just announced, Hugh
Hopper!
HUMI consists of Hugh Hopper (bass, electronics, loops) and Yumi Hara Cawkwell
(voice, keys, found sound). Their new MySpace page is
<http://www.myspace.com/humimyspace>, with audio samples. Their first show is on
1 November at Club Integral in Brixton. (By the way, Club Integral also have
Fred Frith playing on 25 October.)
Yumi is also a huge Yes fan, so I keep bumping into her at Yes-related gigs. I
last saw her a couple of weeks ago when she was taking photos for the Bill
Bruford + pianocircus concert, playing music by composer Colin Riley. Very
interesting, rather strange music: four keyboards surrounding Bruford on his
drum music; partly composed, partly improvised. There were elements of new
music, some Crimson-esque drumming, some more ambient sections.
