Hi everyone-
My name is Eddie and I'm a 22 yr old recent graduate of Creighton Univ and
now work for a nonprofit organization called NAF here in omaha. I'm also
on postcard and have been a WT fan since August-not a long time I know.
Better late than never. Now that's outta the way....
Whiskeytown seems to hold a special place in its heart for omaha and was
proved in two shows here. I have seen Whiskeytown three times and each of
them were completely different and stood out in my memory. I have wrote at
great lenghts to Mel in Milwaukee about my whiskeytown experiences. Just
ask her, huh Mel? I wish I saved them so I can just repost but I'll write
about them over the course of the weekend.
I'll start with WT Part I. Sept 97.
I ventured down to Kansas City for a midweek show at the Hurricane. There
were about 15 or so people by the stage and the rest back by the bar not
caring about WT. Little did I know then but that was the last concert ever
with Phil-lead guitarist, Chris-bassist and the drummer who's name escapes
me. Apparently there was a lot of tension and it may have been decided
that they were being kicked out. They decided to play in the 2nd slot
instead of the headlining slot. Little to no chatter between songs
indicated a desire to just play and get the heck outta there. Phil was
making wisecracks about Ryan and stuff like that-don't remember what.
Anyway that was the best of my 3 WT experiences. The band was so tight it
was unbelievable. Songs such as Yesterday's News and Waiting to Derail
turned into 8 to 9 minute jam sessions. Unbelievable. I wish I had this on
tape it was truly the most memorable WT show. But perhaps the highlight
was the song Today. On some tapes, there are parts on that song where Ryan
adlibs in the middle of the song about something. But in this case, he was
just making up words saying that 'this is it for whiskeytown'-hinting that
the band was through. At the time, it didn't occur to me that he was
serious, even though from the way he was singing it made me believe it. He
also sang to 'not write this on the internet' It was the most powerful
song I have ever heard WT play. Then perhaps a week later I read on
postcard that WT sent those three home after that KC show. Sorry but my
review can't accurately convey how powerful this show was. Subsequent
shows by WT were judged to a very high standard due to this tension-filled
performance by the last show by that lineup.
parts II and III later...
