Reflections on the Eve of Another Rigged Election

The Bush administration can not allow the Democrats to take control
of either house of Congress. And they are in a position to prevent
it, regardless of the will of the American voters.

These are the two controlling facts that make all other conditions
of the coming election trivial in comparison, or even irrelevant.
The failure of the media and even the Democratic Party to
acknowledge and deal with these facts in no way diminishes their
significance. Quite the contrary.

And why can't the Busheviks allow the loss of even one house of
Congress to the Democrats? Such a loss might, of course, result in
the halting and even some reversal of the Bush/GOP agenda. But that
is the least of their concerns. Far more important would be the
reestablishment of Congressional oversight -- of investigations,
with the penalties of perjury and contempt of Congress, into vast
array of crimes committed by the Bush administration. Among these
crimes are bribery, the disappearance of billions of dollars in
Iraq, war crimes, the disregard of acts of Congress, lying to
Congress, and fraudulent elections. In a new, Democratic, House of
Representatives, the incorruptible Henry Waxman, as the new Chair of
the Government Affairs Committee, would doggedly examine and expose
the corruption of the Bush Administration, and John Conyers, the
Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, would, at long last,
energetically investigate the issue of stolen elections.
Accordingly, Bush and his partners in crime face far more than a
curtailment of power; they face possible indictment, prosecution,
and prison sentences for their crimes.

How, then, might the Busheviks avoid accountability for their crimes
by remaining in control of the Congress? The same way that they
seized control of the White House in 2000, and maintained control of
Congress and the White House in 2004, namely by rigging these
elections through their surrogates in "the election industry."

The accumulated weight of evidence has moved e-vote fraud well
beyond the status of mere accusation. To those willing to examine
that evidence scrupulously and objectively, it is now a proven fact.
The refusal of the media to deal with this issue and the
pathetically weak rebuttal-by-ridicule of the debunkers has not
mitigated the force of the evidence. Because I have written
repeatedly and at length [1] about the stealing of the national
elections, I will not argue the point here. Those still unconvinced
are urged to examine these sources [2].  Significantly, despite the
aforementioned media silence and weak rebuttals, a Zogby poll
reports [3] that less than half the public is "very confident that
Bush won [the 2004 election] fair and square," and a third if the
public is "not at all confident that he won fair and square."

Given the likelihood of another rigged election, does this mean that
those of us who desire a Democratic victory - apparently a sizeable
majority of likely voters [4] - should simply give up, accept the
inevitable, and stay at home?

By no means. We should redouble our efforts. For even if the GOP
retains control of Congress through still more of the same
electronic vote fraud combined with their familiar vote-suppression
schemes, this could be the election that finally exposes and puts an
end to the paperless, non-verifiable e-vote scam. If the election
precincts are flooded with crowds of angry citizens demanding the
ouster of the Republican majority in Congress, the GOP just might be
made to pay an exorbitant price for one more rigged election. For
all their advantages, including their control of the election
processes, the GOP faces a daunting dilemma: on the one hand, steal
one more election and risk, at long last, exposure of this crime, or
on the other hand, "allow" the Democrats to take control of one
house of Congress with the expectation that the crimes of the Bush
administration, including election fraud, will be rigorously
investigated.

I expect that the GOP strategists will opt for the former course of
action. Even so, it is just possible that the GOP will still lose
the House, although, given their control of the e-ballots, their
continued the Senate is a lock for the Republicans. To win the
Senate, the Democrats must lose no seats while winning almost all of
the contested seats. Should the GOP "fix" just three close
elections, say in New Jersey, Missouri and Ohio, their control of
the Senate is assured. Even so, that might not be the end of it. If,
by over-reaching this time, the election-fraud machinery is finally
exposed, those ill-gained Senate seats might be contested and
overturned by court challenges.  And these would be decided by state
courts, out of reach of the GOP packed federal courts.

The House of Representatives, however, is a different story. If the
election is close, the Republicans, by "fixing" from one to two
dozen of the most endangered seats, will salvage their majority.
That many individual electoral finagles are quite do-able.

But if as many as a hundred GOP seats are at risk, this may
overwhelm the resources of the Dieboldian (etc.) shock troops.
Moreover, the more individual contests on the "fix-list," the larger
the circle of election conspirators and the greater the risk that
one of these scams will misfire and blow open the e-voting crime
wave. Then a chain-reaction of disclosures might follow, reaching
back to Ohio in 2004, Georgia in 2002, and Florida in 2000, to
mention just a few electoral crime scenes.

And it appears now that a tsunami of voter discontent might strike
the ballot boxes on November 7. The latest Newsweek poll [5] reports
that "fully 53 percent of Americans want the Democrats to win
control of Congress next month..., compared to just 35 percent who
want the GOP to retain power." This 18% gap is considerably more
than that which preceded the 40 seat sweep of the "Republican
revolution" of 1994.

Accordingly, Paul Krugman observes [6] that

a huge Democratic storm surge is heading toward a high Republican
levee. It's still possible that the surge won't overtop the levee --
that is, the Democrats could fail by a small margin to take control
of Congress. But if the surge does go over the top, the flooding
will almost surely reach well inland -- that is, if the Democrats
win, they'll probably win big.

And the much-respected and non-partisan observer, Charlie Cook [7]
notes that

For Republicans, it is a time to defend every seat, no matter how
secure those seats appear. If things don't change, GOP incumbents,
who never even contemplated having a difficult race, may well lose
this year. And if I were a Republican, I'd start praying that
something happens to take the spotlight away from Iraq and scandals,
because this current issue mix is lethal.

If that "tsunami" strikes on November 7, just as the "fixers" are at
work on the presumably "endangered" seats, a strange and suspicious
profile will emerge: close "contested" seats will be won
overwhelmingly by the Republicans, while many "safe" Republican
seats will be lost to the Democrats.

Now suppose that despite the polls and the well-publicized
discontent of the voters, the Republicans retain control of both
houses of the Congress. Suppose further, that this is the result of
numerous allegedly "miraculous upsets," none by Democratic
candidates, and all by GOP candidates who overcome fifteen to twenty
point polling deficits. (Among these, Ken Blackwell, the Ohio
Secretary of State who "administered" the 2004 Ohio election, now a
candidate for Governor, is trailing his opponent Ted Strickland by
eighteen points).

Should this occur, can the dirty secret of stolen elections still be
contained? Or might not, instead, the backbone of public denial and
media silence finally be broken?

If, this time, the GOP control of the vote counting once again
frustrates the will of a large majority of the voters, the
proportion of doubters (half of the population, according to Zogby)
will likely increase. Perhaps then much more than half will
seriously doubt the validity of the elections, while many
more "somewhat" doubt these results. At some point of no-confidence,
the public at large will finally come to realize that the government
of the United States no longer rules with "the consent of the
governed" and thus lacks the legitimacy to govern.

What then? Worst case: Bush imposes the dictatorial powers given him
by the Patriot Act and by the Military Commissions Act (of September
28), and the United States becomes in fact what it is now
implicitly, a dictatorship. Best case: the people, united, overthrow
the illegitimate regime. This has happened recently, in Ukraine in
2004 and in the Soviet Union in 1991. Most significantly, it
happened in July, 1776, justified by a document known as "The
Declaration of Independence," which proclaimed:

That to secure these Rights [to life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness], Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their
just powers from the consent of the governed, That, whenever any
Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the
Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new
Government...

It is not without justification that some have called the upcoming
election of November 7, 2006 the most significant non-presidential
election in the history of the United States of America.

Now, at long last, the balance of power might be turning against the
Busheviks, as their "establishment" corporate supporters and
traditional conservatives seem to be having second thoughts, and as
these qualms are reflected in the mainstream media.

Traditional conservatives, such as Richard Viguerie, Paul Weirich,
Bruce Fein, and Joe Scarborough, are publicly proclaiming that the
Bush administration has abandoned their core principles of limited
government and fiscal responsibility, and that a Democratic victory
in November, and the resulting divided government, "might not be a
bad thing." Dissenting opinions are becoming ever more conspicuous
in the media, among them Bob Woodward (at long last!), and the
disaffected evangelical Christian and former official of
Bush's "Faith Based Initiatives," David Kuo, both of whom appeared
in successive appearances in CBS's 60 Minutes.

As I have repeatedly suggested [8], where the Bush regimes leads,
enlightened corporate and media interests should not choose to
follow. These interests flourished under the Clinton administration,
during unprecedented economic growth when the United States and its
political principles were respected throughout the world. Moreover,
these same "establishment" interests must appreciate that in the
coming collapse of the United States economy, there will be no
winners.

Who could have predicted a month ago the present disarray of the GOP
and the decline of its prospects in the upcoming election?  The
Foley scandal and its aftershocks were nowhere in sight, and
continuing Republican control of the Congress seemed secure.
Likewise, we can only guess at what surprises might suddenly appear
in the remaining four weeks of the campaign.

When it is all over, we may discover that this contest will have
been won by the side that responded to these developments, promptly,
intelligently, and decisively.

This is no time for apathy, despair and surrender.

Ryan Adams Message Board Fiasco

Ryan Adams has been known to do some pretty crazy things, like kick
hecklers out of shows, leave silly messages on Pitchfork's answering
machine, and record bad rap songs. But even though we like to make
fun of ol' Ry sometimes (ok, a lot of times), we aren't going to
pick on him for something he didn't do.

Last week, the interweb was buzzing with rumors that Adams had
demanded the shutdown of the message board on popular fan site
RyanAdams.org, a privately-owned site over which Adams had no legal
power. Allegedly, Adams and his management sought editorial control
over the board's contents.

However, Pitchfork contacted David Smith, proprietor of
RyanAdams.org, who set the record straight. "Ryan's management
contacted me Tuesday, asking that the board be temporarily shut
down," he disclosed. "Initially there were reports of censorship or
an inability to deal with criticism and negative show reviews. But
I've since had the opportunity to discuss the issue directly with
Ryan...and apparently sensitive information of a personal nature had
been exposed on the board which was a threat to the band. I won't go
into details, but he was (understandably so) quite upset about this.

"I would like to stress that taking the board down was a voluntary
action on my part. RyanAdams.org is a privately owned domain name,
so I don't see a legal recourse. But out of respect for Ryan, I made
the decision to comply with his request.

"I don't see the point of running a 'fan site' for an artist who
disapproves of it, so the decision was an attempt at maintaining
good relations with Ryan and his management."

Smith went on to explain that Adams' management has not requested
any sort of direct editorial control. Instead, its members are
interested in instituting technical changes to the webpage, "making
it harder to create an account just to cause trouble, and easier to
moderate when problems do occur."

Assuming the changes are accepted by both parties, the forum should
return in the near future. If an agreement isn't reached, a last
resort option is moving the website to disassociate it with Adams,
though this "doesn't look likely," according to Smith.Adams and his
management offered no comment on the situation.

Since the incident took place, a message intended to "dispel rumors"
popped up on RyanAdams.org. One point reads that the incident
prompting the shutdown "occurred while the band was in London, and
Ryan's hotel room information was posted to the message board. In
another incident, personal information about Ryan's parents was
posted to the board."

Jeez, people-- you should know by now that pissing off the Adams
Family in October is bad news!

In the meantime, RyanAdams.org regulars have moved over to the
message board at alt-country.org.

Not much new, but I wanted to clarify a few things, espeically with
the press getting hold of this story. From the .org front page:

I'd like to clarify a few points in order to dispel rumors:

- The specific incident that prompted this action occurred while the
band was in London, and Ryan's hotel room information was posted to
the message board. In another incident, personal information about
Ryan's parents was posted to the board.

- Ryan did not, as the media has been reporting, take down the site.
The decision to take it down was mine, until we can implement
changes to address situations such as those mentioned above.

- Ryan and the Cardinals are not interested in censorship or
restricting the content of the message board -- they only want to
ensure that sensitive, personal information is not shared online.
This is not a ploy to squelch bad show reviews, etc.

With the site down, we are also discussing other (unrelated)
improvements and new features that may be added. This looks to be
evolving into a larger update than originally planned, so please
bear with me. I'll give more details as they become available.
Thanks again for your patience, and I appreciate all the support
I've received over the past week or so. More to come.

Just so you all know, I am having disuccusions directly with Ryan,
and we're working together on a number of possible changes. Expect a
domain name change, and also some new content (unrelated to the
message board) when we come back up. Its looking like there will be
some good positive change coming out of all this.

Also, it is likely that alt-country.org will stay online even after
we're back up, although no final decisions have been made yet.

As I understand it someone posted the location of a motel where Ryan
and the Cardinals were staying, a violation of their privacy which
in turn jeopardized their safety. I see that being a definite cause
for concern but I can't say I exactly agree about the way he went
about handling it.

Is it just me, or is Ry starting to be more trouble
than he's worth?  I hope he doesnt read this and kick
me out of Yahoo groups.  There have just been way too
many wack incidents for me to remain an apologist.  i
resign.

request! The last few months saw him posting to the

October 2nd drew his ire, Adams asked for the site to
be taken off
line, temporarily, and for some editorial control. And
by some, we
mean total. Here's the salient point, from the updated
Acceptable
Use Policy, detailing "Unacceptable Content":

Any content that Ryan and/or his management finds
unacceptable. His
management has an administrator account.

No wiggle room there. And despite this carte blanche,
the temporary
take-down has become indefinite, and now without our
go-to place for
Ry Ry gossip we feel so lost. And scared. And ...
alone.

For added insight, here's an email from board-owner

the animated film "Open Season" and its soundtrack.

The excitement begins Monday, September 25th, as Paul reunites with
his band The Replacements for a performance at the premier of "Open
Season," to be held at the prestigious Greek Theater in Los Angeles.

On Tuesday, the "Open Season" soundtrack (on Lost Highway Records)
hits store shelves, featuring songs by Paul Westerberg. Throughout

If anyone of you are using McAfee products, and they ask you to update to a
better free of charge update, RUN, RUN as fast as you can, and DO NOT update. I
have used MacAfee for virus protection for many years, and been very happy. I
have never had a virus scare or any other problems until now. This past weekend,
I received a new and improved update from MacAfee, It was offering free of
charge a new update that included firewall protection, spyware protection, and
new and enhanced virus protection to current subscribers. I thought what the
hell, well it has just about made my $2,000.00 computer system useless. It
started out after I downloaded the new update. It would ask, when I went to any
of my usual websites if I trusted them, after hitting Okay, it would take me to
the site, but today all of a sudden, my system started running like someone had
poured molasses along with honey, and syrup into my system, needless to say, it
was running slower than ever before. Then I started getting error messages
saying IE needs to be shut down and restarted, then this program is not
responding, it did this with almost every site I attempted to access, so after
going ballistic, screwing up my computer desk, shaking my desk so hard, I dumped
ice tea down the side of my desk destroying several irreplaceable pieces of
paper, collectables, CD's and other items. I was about ready to throw the whole
system out the front plate glass window, then cooler heads prevailed. I decided
to contact MacAfee and let them know there new update was worse than any virus I
could have encountered, but it gets better, when I accessed their site, they
want $44.95 to talk to a live person, this is total bullshit. They do have a
virtual Tech. system that is free, and is supposed to search my system for any
problems with their software. I pay $39.95 annually to have the pleasure to run
their virus protection software, but it cost $44.95 to talk to a live tech. who
is probably 18 years old and clueless, this is total BULLSHIT. If anyone works
for MacAfee or knows someone who does, I would like to invite them over for a
nice evening of drinks, and a baseball bat cocktail, it will start with the bat
being shoved up their ass, and then after that I will beat the living shit out
of them, for even being associated with such an evil vile virus producing
company. I have lost several thousands in computer, and other related items that
were close to my computer area. I pray that I will meet up with one of their
techs. someday ;-) It will not be pretty, I think these slimy software companies
should be sued out of existence, and everyone working for them should get very
long prison terms bunking with a large guy named Bubba. Thank you for basically
destroying my computer, with your so called free upgrade. Come on over for
dinner sometime, and bring your headgear. Oh, and by the way, their virtual
tech. has been running for over two hours now with no explanations of what's
going on, totally clueless, next time Norton. I'm sorry I have not been able to
reply or join in on any current Stones discussions, but I am too busy trying to
get my computer up and running, drying out damaged documents, and one of a kind
CD's & artwork, and in my spare time I plan on hunting down any McAfee employees
to beat around the head with a large bat. Sorry for the rants, but these sleazy
money grubbing bastards deserve everything they get, and that does not include a
fat paycheck in my eyes....... :-))))))) and I'm not laughing, it's a deranged
look on my face....

Like I know the blues, Gram Parsons knew country music
-- every nuance, every great country song that was
ever written. And he could express it all -- the music
from Nashville and Bakersfield, California, the stuff
from Texas -- in his singing and songwriting. But he
also had intelligence and honesty. That's the kind of
guy I like to hang with. Also, he loved to get stoned.
At the time, that was an added plus.
I first met Gram in 1968, when the Byrds were
appearing in London -- I think it was a club called
Blazes. I knew the Byrds from Mr. Tambourine Man on;
the Stones had worked some shows in California with
them back then. But when I saw them at Blazes with
Gram, I could see this was a radical turn. I went
backstage, and we hooked up. Then the Byrds came
through London again, on their way to South Africa. I
was like, "Man, we don't go there." The sanctions and
the embargo were on. So he quit the Byrds, right there
and then. Of course, he's got nowhere to stay, so he
moved in with me.
Basically, we hung around together, like musicians do.
We'd spend hours and hours at the piano, swapping
ideas. Gram and I both loved the songs of Felice and
Boudleaux Bryant -- the Everly Brothers stuff they
wrote. We both loved that melancholy, high-lonesome
shit. We were always looking for the next
heart-tugger, looking to pull that extra heartstring.
As a songwriter, Gram worked very much like I do,
which is knock out a couple of chords, start to spiel
and see how far it can go. Rather than sitting around
with a piece of paper and a pen, trying to make things
fit neatly together, if you just get on the
microphone, things come to you. Lines come to you that
you wouldn't dream of, because they have to come to
you in a split second. Gram liked to do that. But he
would also work very hard -- harder than I ever did --
on honing it down.
It's difficult for me to pick one of his songs as a
favorite. "Sin City," on the Flying Burrito Brothers'
first album, is great. I love "I Can't Dance," on GP.
But you'll never get a full portrait of him from one
or two songs.
Mick and Gram never really clicked, mainly because the
Stones are such a tribal thing. At the same time, Mick
was listening to what Gram was doing. Mick's got ears.
Sometimes, while we were making Exile on Main Street
in France, the three of us would be plonking away on
Hank Williams songs while waiting for the rest of the
band to arrive. Gram had the biggest repertoire of
country songs you could imagine. He was never short of
a song.
The drugs and drinking -- he was no better or worse
than the rest of us. He just made that one fatal
mistake -- taking that one hit after he cleaned up,
still thinking he could take the same amount. And it
was too fucking much. But he didn't get into dope
because of us. He knew his stuff before he met us.
I think he was just getting into his stride when he
died. His actual output -- the number of records he
made and sold -- was pretty minimal. But his effect on
country music is enormous. This is why we're talking
about him now. But we can't know what his full impact
could have been. If Buddy Holly hadn't gotten on that
plane, or Eddie Cochran hadn't turned the wrong
corner, think of what stuff we could have looked
forward to, and be hearing now. It would be
phenomenal.
In a way, it's a matter of lost love. Gram was
everything you wanted in a singer and a songwriter. He
was fun to be around, great to play with as a
musician. And that motherfucker could make chicks cry.
I have never seen another man who could make hardened
old waitresses at the Palomino Club in L.A. shed tears
the way he did.

It was all in the man. I miss him so.

Golden Smog Another Fine Day   Lost Highway


The third full length from this modern day super group
of Midwestern jangle and twangers finds them reaching
further toward the elusive Big Star in the sky.  Read
my lips: “This is a great thing.”  If there is a group
that can reel in that star it is this collaborative.
Gary Louris and Mark Perlman (Jayhawks), Dan Murphy
  ( Soul Asylum), Kraig Johnson (Run Westy Run ), and
Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) combine their uber-impressive
array of talents to create a cohesive statement that
screams that thoughtful, yet fun rock is not, in fact,
dead, but actually thriving.  Lush harmonies are the
uniting factor of the 15! tunes presented here (14
originals and a Kinks cover sung by Tweedy and
Louris).  Instrumentation ranges from pounding keys to
Leslied-synthesizers, strummy acoustic guitars to
chunky dry distorted electrics, light brushed drums to
kit pounding madness, plucked banjos to strummed
mandolins.  Recorded over two sessions (one in Spain
and one in Minneapolis), this platter finds the band
collaborating to a greater degree, even laying aside
the “he who writes, sings” tenet.  If the players’
contributions were drawn straws, the songs are the
spun gold.  “Listen Joe” by Tweedy and Louris is an
instant FM classic- an elegant, minor key
finger-picked ode to a lost friend.  “Corvette”, the
tune commissioned by Guy Richie for a TV commercial
which kickstarted this group’s re-association, chugs
along ala Memphis power pop, circa 1973, and would fit
nicely on current FM airwaves as well.  So while
Golden Smog’s 1995 “Down By the Old Mainstream” LP is
a high water mark in my record collection, “Another
Fine Day” looks to be a perfect bookend, a little more
rock, a little less country, and a whole lot of fun.
Let’s not wait another 8 years for the next one, boys!

Does anyone know the actual origin of this video? The write up at You
Tube says it's a promo video but I have to wonder under what context
it was released since the theater marquee in the video has Logan's Run
listed (which, of course came out after Gram had died).
