FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

A Language of Passion

Documentary Sheds Universal Light on Latino Artistry

LOS ANGELES - After watching “A Language of Passion,” even the snootiest
of art aficionados would be hard pressed not to admit that an art scene
does indeed exist in Los Angeles. Despite the fact that the primary
subject matter is Latino artists and their contribution to modern
culture, this documentary takes you on a journey through a plethora of
venues ranging from The LA County Museum of Art to Self Help Graphics in
the heart of the East LA barrio to art installations along the Los
Angeles River.

“A Language of Passion” is a bilingual documentary following present day
Latino artists in Los Angeles: muralist Eloy Torrez, sculptor Cecilia
Miguez, painter Arturo Mallmann, printmaker and installation artist
Vibiana Aparicio-Chamberlin, and stone carver Rudy Calderon, originally
from New Mexico, Uruguay, Argentina, East Los Angeles and Costa Rica,
respectively. Although all of the artwork and music depicted in the film
is created by artists of Latin descent, the “language” referred to in the
title is not Spanish, but art.

Through this delightful montage of episodes in the lives of these
artists, the filmmaker successfully clarifies the broad spectrum that is
Latino art – from the stereotypical “Chicana” who creates art for a
purpose, with no thought of making money with it; the public artist who
makes a living through his art yet yearns for the time to work on his own
personal art; the artist whose primary concern is to create art that
reflects the spiritual path that is his life; the artist who gave up all
of her security, a stable job and husband, in order to devote herself to
her art; to the artist who encounters problems with his long-time gallery
owners which leads to conflict within himself, but in the end stays true
to his own ideals.

Interspersed throughout is candid commentary with other artists
discussing concerns or issues that arise in connection with their culture
and/or assimilation into cosmopolitan American society, but it is not
until the end of the film, that the five principal artists address how
they view themselves as part of today’s American culture.

Writer, producer, director, Patricia Cunliffe paints a distinct portrait
of each individual, including the artists that are only delivering
commentary. Ambitious in its endeavor, engaging in its execution, what
this film may lack in technical proficiency is more than amply made up
for in human consciousness.

While the term “Latin Art” may still bring to mind images of colorful
religious iconography, in truth, Latin art encompasses a much broader
spectrum, as diverse and interesting as are the artists who create it. “A
Language of Passion” is an inspiring portrait of Latino artistry in Los
Angeles today, a discourse on art and identity, cultural diversity and an
insight to the possibilities that a life of art brings.
