New Beat (definition): A mashup of spoken word, beat poetry, rap and hip-hop,
fusion jazz and be-bob, new-age and soft-rock as personified by DJ Monkey,
another mashup of aging hipsters and rising youth to represent.
DJ Monkey's new CD--"Third World War"--pushes all the buttons except the big,
red one labeled "Nuke 'Em." No one is safe and nothing is sacred as Joey and the
crew holds a mirror up to what society has become. From a fast-paced life
trapped in the shuffle of a big city you can't help but love--to the inner
yearnings of the souls of men, young and old, these tracks could inspire a
revolution, personal or otherwise.
From start to finish, the songs take you on a journey from New York to
California, with glimmers of hope and respite along the highway of hell-bent
destruction; coming to a final crossroad where like-minds can meet and feel a
kindred security. I like how issues are presented from all directions, like a
hall of mirrors that lead you to find the way out--the truth--for yourself.
Another aspect of the group that really gets me excited is the mix in both
artistic style/genre and melding the youngers with the olders of the group.
What's even more interesting is the dialog that happened when I played the CD
for my young-adult friends, 19 and 20 years old. At first, they seemed confused
and then they got it. We keep trying to pigeon-hole people and ideas into our
own comfort zones. DJ Monkey is very good at taking you away from all that. Best
of all, it's fun!
The last two tracks on the CD are the angst killers to bring you out of DJ
Monkey's reality and back into the matrix. Without these little, blue pills,
we'd be trapped by our own social conscience and it could change our perspective
forever. Or did DJ Monkey already wake that thing up, inside, that will not die?
Pardon me now while I slip out of my black leggings and oversized turtleneck
... it's time for me to go put something tie-died back on. I've got war-mongers
to battle and windmills to tilt at.
