First of all, I'm happy to say it did take place as the Gropius in
Chicago Coalition's website had announced. The GCC's founder, Grahm
Balkany thought the protest was a success. He estimated about twenty
people came out. (I was the lone MSAE/WLP member participating. I wore
by my-ear binaural mics and recorded most of the event on a Yamaha
Pocketrack G2 that I have on loan from a friend.)
On my arrival I met the GCC supporters outside in the Daley Plaza,
which was almost completely occupied by the outdoor Christmas market
stalls. After a short time more people joined us and we all crossed
Clark Street to enter the Cook County office building, at 118 N Clark,
where the City's Aldermanic offices, the Mayor's office, their Press
Office, and the Zoning Commission are all housed. We spent a full hour
going from office to office. Grahm spoke to the zoning commissioner and
handed him an information packet. He spoke to a representative for the
Aldermen's office and a representative of Mayor Daley. The latter
promised she'd have Daley see the information packet. It was hard to
judge her sincerity but I do believe Grahm made a convincing case.
Serendipity provided a taped TV interview of Grahm and other GCC
members by WTTW's "Chicago
Tonight" correspondent Rick Samuels. (We don't know if it will be
broadcast.)
The protest concluded with a visit to the Chicago Landmarks Commission,
at 33 N LaSalle, where Grahm delivered the information packets. We were
told that Brian Goeken and other commissioners were facing with a 2
o'clock deadline to send out a report, so all Grahm could do was hand
over the GCC's info packets and explain their importance to the
receptionist. All of us signed in and out on the office's list.
Here is a link to the printer friendly version of the GCC's report on
the Commission's hearing in which they rejected landmark status for the
Michael Reese Hospital campus: http://tinyurl.com/yfpcu54
To receive breaking news and to find out what you can do to help save
Chicago's architectural legacy please check the GCC web page, and their Twitter and
Facebook profiles. As one GCC supporter put it, "we have to stop the
'archi-cide'."
All the best,

I regret to announce that due to circumstances beyond our control the
Acoustic Mirror of the World, along with all the Synesthetic Plan of
Chicago modules, have to be removed from the Little Black Pearl by the end of
this week. We had expected our installation would be able to run there
for many months while the WLP held classes on sound and listening
practices at the LBP.
While this is unfortunate setback, I do think we can find a new public
site for the AMW. In the interim we have the opportunity make some
improvements on its design in a more thorough way. (Perhaps you can
suggest a suitable venue that would be happy to host its presence.)
I can make some time this week to drive down and pick up the AMW along
with the WLP module. I will also pick up Brett Balogh’s and Laura
Goldstein’ modules while I’m there. Can anyone help me?
Since Greg O’Drobinak spearheaded the engineering of the AMW, I hoping
he’ll keep the installation at his home/workshop in the interim.
The Little Black Pearl is open until 6:00 p.m. on weekdays. Address:
1060 E. 47th Street, on the northwest corner of Greenwood.
So, if you have been planning to send us an audio submission, please
don't hestitate: the invitation still stands. I'll keep receiving them
via yousendit.com or whatever sharing system you like. Chad Clark will
feature the audio submissions on the WLP website and, as mentioned, I
expect that we will find a new public venue to house the installation.
And, if you're reading this and wondering what the AMW is, I've
described it as an sculpture or installation or instrument that
provides a "synesthetic" or tactile experience of sound. By using
low-frequency transducers, it is similar to Ricard Huisman's "Super
Sonic Sound Scape Shoes" or Kaffe Matthews' "Soundbed". Please see the WLP website for
more info, picts, etc.
Jim Cummings, founder of the ASAE is very interested in this subject.
You may want to check out the ASAE news feed which can find linked on
the MSAE website: http://mwsae.org

Hi Folks,
Just wanted to let you know that there will be an opening reception
for my piece 'Chora' presented as part of the 10th annual Outer Ear
Festival of Sound at the Experimental Sound Studio tomorrow evening.
The piece had it's inaugural run during 10ms: Perspectives on
Microsound at Diapason Gallery in Brooklyn NY last month and has now
migrated to Chicago. Please come by if you can!
"Chora is a generative meditation on the impermanence of form for
projected video and 4 channels of audio, whose inspiration comes from
the tectonic activity of the Pacific Ring of Fire. The work puts the
viewer at the center of an minimal audio-visual composition that is
constantly in motion. Rather than sound and image simply being
accompaniments to each other, they are instead projections of a veiled
system of forces created by a computer simulation. Through sound and
image, the work aims to create for the viewer a liminal space between
the virtual and the actual through which the viewer can envision new
forms."

I'm forwarding this call for works, wondering some of you would be
interested in submitting individually or as a group, such as Chicago
Phonography, or under the auspices of the World Listening
Project...deadline is January 7, 2010.
Hello all,
Here's a call for your participation in Ear to the Earth next year.
About Ear to the Earth
Ear to the Earth is an annual festival and worldwide network based on
the idea that environmental sound can connect us to the environment
with a special vibrancy and emotional depth.
About next year's festival
The theme of next year's Ear to the Earth festival, to take place in
October 2010, will be water.
Although the festival will be focused at different venues in New York
City, it will have an international scope. We would like to
demonstrate that artists around the world are concerned about the
environment.
We're interested in the sounds of water and/or sounds or performances
that will make us aware of water. We want to direct the public's
attention to environmental problems relating to water, including, as a
few examples, drinkable water, melting ice, rising sea levels, and
polluted rivers.
The festival will incude documentary field recordings, instrumental
and electronic compositions, performances, installations, interactive
websites, and any other forms of experimental audio with imagery and
multimedia. To create a clear context for the festival, we are also
planning to invite scientists and artists to participate in panels and
forums on different aspects of water-related issues.
Call for works
Send descriptions of your ideas or works, or send pointers to websites
or downloads by email to emf@... with the words 'Ear to the Earth'
in the subject line.
If you prefer to send examples of your works as CDs or DVDs, send them
to EMF, 307 Seventh Avenue Ste 1402, New York, NY 10001.
If you have an idea for a specific venue in New York City, let us
know. If you plan to produce a water-related event anywhere throughout
the world during October 2010, and if you would like us to include it
as a festival event, let us know.
Our deadline for receiving ideas and materials is January 7, 2010.
We're beginning now to curate the festival, so please act or be in
touch as soon as you can.
Best,
Joel

See you there,

This is a reminder that tomorrow (Monday) evening I'm meeting with
local members of the
World Listening Project
(WLP) and Midwest Society for Acoustic
Ecology (MSAE) at the
Chicago Cultural Center, at 5:00 p.m., one hour before Site Unseen.
Look for me in the first floor hall near the Randolph Street side,
where the large wooden "Silence" piece hangs opposite from the large
"licenSe" sign. Usually, there a lot of tables and chairs available in
this open space.
P.P.S.: This will also be an opportunity to experience "Reactor" and
"Countdown," two sound installations by MW Burns, a part of the ESS
Outer Ear Festival of Sound running through December 13.
Earlier today I spoke with one of the owners of Café Ballou (http://cafeballou.tumblr.com/, 939 N.
Western Ave.) about the idea of a soundwalk happening in Chicago’s
Ukrainian Village, followed by a listening event at Café Ballou. She is interested
in working with MSAE / WLP on this project.
I had suggested that the event could happen on the evening
of Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, which is Ukrainian artist Kasimir Malevich’s
birthday. The soundwalk destinations might include: the Ukrainian National
Museum and other TBA spots. What do you all think about this idea?
I invite WLP supporters to attend a meeting this Monday evening at the
Chicago Cultural Center. I will be there at 5:00, one hour before the
beginning of the Site Unseen performances.
The first floor hall on the Randolph Street side seems a good spot
(where the huge wood "Silence" piece hangs).
I'd be happy to know if you can or can't attend. Please email me, not
the list, and let me know if you can, and of any agenda ideas you may
have. Please stay tuned for updates/details.
I've been meaning to work on making a proximity sensor to control the
volume level of the "Acoustic Mirror of the World" installation.
There's no time for me to do given largely to having too many things to
do already and my low-level electronics knowledge. Is there there
anyone who can volunteer their time to help us this?
Greetings! It is indeed a busy time in our community and on campus. I
learned of the following experimental and world music events this week
and thought folks on my list would like to know about them. And next
week (Fri, Nov 13 - Tue, Nov 17) --- PAULINE OLIVEROS!!! --- will be
performing at Krannert Art Museum, offering weekend Deep Listening
workshops, giving a lecture for the CAS Initiative "Interpreting
Technoscience", talking about composing/performing for dance and
speaking at a special Composers Forum.
Hope to see you there, and as always let me know if you'd like to be
removed from this list.
Be well and keep listening.
best,
Jason

I just submitted this comment to Margaret's "Sound Is Art" blog:
I wonder if Charlie Mydlarz is a member of the UK's
affiliate of the World Forum for Acosutic Ecology. The questions the
soundaroundyou pose are the same ones R. Murray Schafer asks us when we
go on soundwalks. When we began the World Listening Project in July,
2008 our aim was to collect recording from around the world and create
an online world soundscape map. However, it was clear that so many of
these already existed and we decided to collaborate with the real-time

thanks,
Pauline Oliveros just gave me the news that Maryann died yesterday at
9:30. I've know her for almost 40 years - since the days of Ampex
350 and 440 tape recorders and can still see her sitting at them for
hours with her earphones. I'm pleased that we were able to bring her
here as a visiting artist - she loved the experience and would write
me periodically about the possibility of returning.
