This week's events
One of the most underappreciated artists around, and yet among the most adored by his fans, Vic Chesnutt (7.30pm Thur 11/19) writes of the fragility of life, the vagaries and randomness of existence, and the bizarrely skewed people who populate our world. Easy listening he ain't necessarily so (or, as Pitchfork puts it: "Vic Chesnutt could rarely be accused of having a sunny disposition, but even considering that, his latest album features some truly harrowing material"), but all the same, Vic is charming (if sometimes crass), unflinchingly honest and epic--and tonight he has a full band of worthy collaborators and co-conspirators, including Guy Picciotto (of Fugazi) and members of Thee Silver Mt. Zion/godspeed you! black emperor and Witchies -- the team behind 2007's North Star Deserter, as well as Vic's latest, At The Cut.
"Lyrically, Chesnutt has converted his psyche into something between a short-story collection and the final act of King Lear." (The Onion AV Club)
"Vic Chesnutt's music always seems to be approaching beauty, just as his lyrics are forever closing in on meaning. It's up to the listener to push the songs over the edge, and it can be immensely satisfying when you do." (Washington Post)
You can listen to a few tracks, and read more reviews of At The Cut here
Setting the stage nicely, expect stripped down somber Southern folk from opener Liz Durrett, whose Uncle Vic (yes, that Vic) produced her first two albums.
Sponsored by vita.mn

Let the dance party begin with The Brass Messengers and NOMO (8pm Fri 11/20)! The Brass Messengers deliver on the promise of playing whatever sort of music they can fit into their horns. Tonight, they'll have some special guests along with the North Star Roller Girls, Cabezon puppets, and Chicks on Sticks. NOMO is a raucous Afrobeat/Electronica-ish collective from Michigan, should be a great warmup for the party.
Sponsored by 90.3 and 106.7 KFAI

Another terrific children's entertainer stops by in the form of two-time Grammy-winning Bill Harley (11am Sat 11/21), a singer, spoken word artist, and NPR commentator with a delightful sense of humor and positive outlook on life. Sponsored by 90.3 and 106.7 KFAI. Target Family Series at The Cedar

Boiled in Lead (8pm Sat 11/21) got a shot in the proverbial arm when uber-guitarist  and all-round good guy Dean Magraw joined them a few years back. Now, the band is reciprocating with this benefit for Dean, unable to work due to a bone marrow transplant earlier in the year. A treat to hear BiL anytime, this night promises to be extra special. They'll even get some help for a few songs from Ruth MacKenzie! There'll be a silent auction, and opportunities to send your money straight to Dean--and all proceeds from the evening go to Dean, so make this your time to show your love for Dean.

Spend Sunday evening with a cosy 416 Club hosted by the venerable Dan Newton aka Daddy Squeeze (7.30pm Sun 11/22), with special guests Davina & the Vagabonds, Spider John Koerner, and the Daddy Squeeze Band. There'll even be some tap dancing from Keane Sense of Rhythm. All this for only $5? You betcha! Sponsored by 90.3 and 106.7 KFAI

You might not recognize the name (yet), but Harper Simon (7.30pm Tues 11/24) has been inevitably thrust into the music business all his life, growing up as the son of Paul Simon, and immortalized in these lines from Graceland:

"My traveling companion is nine years old
He is the child of my first marriage
But I've reason to believe
We both will be received
In Graceland"

Harper is now 37, just released his debut solo album of country-folk songs (with dad pitching in on a couple of songs, along with a raft of other top talent), and immediately been thrust into the limelight with appearances on Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel Live.  Sounding uncannily like his father on many tracks (not surprising, perhaps, given the only slightly less than 50% of Paul's DNA he inherited), and yet with his own voice emerging clearly from the enormous shadow that must have been cast over him, Harper is an artist to watch--and see now in a small venue, while you can. Opener Peter Wolf Crier is the appealing new folk-pop project by Peter Pisano, formerly of The Wars of 1812.

Dear Cedar Patrons,

Below are some updates from The Cedar including a special event announcement and an important fundraising opportunity.

Doc Watson Performance

I am pleased to announce that The Cedar will host a special performance by American guitarist and seven-time Grammy award winner Doc Watson on Saturday, May 15th, 2010. Because of his acclaimed work and infrequent performances, this will be the highest profile show in Cedar history. Unrivaled programming like this is made possible with support from donors and patrons like you. To say thank you, we’re offering our donors and newsletter subscribers the opportunity to purchase tickets before the official on-sale date. Tickets are $65 for general admission and $80 for center section seating. Click here to purchase tickets (limit two per customer) with the access code “leader.”

Staycation Campaign: Thank you!

Meanwhile, don’t forget about the plethora of other amazing events at The Cedar (thecedar.org/event). Our current fundraising campaign, Cedar Staycation, promotes the idea that Cedar events are as much fun as a vacation but without the expense and travel time, which is especially helpful during a recession. And when you make a donation of at least $50, you get 2-for-1 admission on select concert events like those listed here. Because of the recent recession, foundations’ assets are down, and many have pulled their arts funding; this means your donation to The Cedar is especially important this year. Supporting The Cedar demonstrates that the Twin Cities arts scene is important to you.

A great way to support The Cedar

Make a donation to The Cedar through GiveMN.org this TUESDAY NOV 17th, and your contribution will help The Cedar to raise more! The Saint Paul Foundation, Minneapolis Foundation and Bush Foundation have committed $500,000 in matching funds for Minnesota non-profits; The Cedar gets a portion of this for each donation made to us through GiveMN.org on Tuesday starting at 8am. What’s more, the organization with the largest number of donors will get an additional $5,000, so any amount helps!

Please consider making a donation this Tuesday, Nov 17th at GiveMN.org, and forward this email to friends and family so they can join the cause!

Thanks for your support. See you at The Cedar,

Adrienne Dorn, Director of Development

“LETS ALL POLKA TODAYâ€

DANCE LESSONS ON DVD

Chicago (PMN)-Dancers Matt and Elaine, known to many as the top polka dancers in the country, have just released an instructional learn-to-polka DVD entitled "Let's All Polka Today!" The DVD is 60 minutes long and is both instructional and entertaining. It features three sections of polka dance instruction from basic to advanced sequences with spins and turns. In addition, there is a bonus of "Polka in Paradise" line dance with instructions and group demonstration, plus a video clip of Matt and Elaine's high-energy performance dancing. The DVD also includes a special appearance by 16-time Grammy Award winner Jimmy Sturr and features the music of The Jimmy Sturr Orchestra.
Matt and Elaine have appeared on many TV shows: "The Rachael Ray Show," "Good Day New York," and are the featured dancers of the Jimmy Sturr Show on RFD satellite television. They have been teaching and performing across the country and continue to take the polka to new and diverse audiences.
The DVD is step-by-step, easy to learn, fun and entertaining. It is available via the Polonia Today Online website at "www.poloniatoday.com/store-extras/index.html"

A message to all homies of Conjunto is Life

On behalf of everyone at Conjunto is Life, we want to recognize all our Veteranos and all those active duty members that have served in combat. God bless you all!
My dad Natividad Martinez served in WWII and was a Purple Heart recipient, my uncle José Rangel as well. Here is a picture of my tío José playing the squeeze box during the war! He was in the Phillipines. You see Conjunto really IS life!!! ¡Conjunto realmente si es vida!

Sun. 1/24/10 Curtis & Loretta CD Release
Curtis and Loretta have a penchant for traditional tunes. This time they have outdone themselves, by jumping into the time machine and emerging in 1800's Minnesota, capturing the music that helped make Minnesota what it is today with their Our Heritage in Song project. MORE

This WILL be sold out within a few hours. While you are at it, pick up your tickets for Natalie MacMaster, Dave Rawlings Machine, and David Grisman and John Sebastian, among other shows showing very strong advance sales.

This week's events
Zipps Fall Beer Tasting (6.30pm Wed 11/4).
Avoid the draughts at home, and hop to The Cedar and imbibe the company of some stout friends and fine Belgians--guaranteed good for whatever ales you, and sure to help you put those la(r)ger problems in perspective. No point fermenting and being bitter, two heads are better than one.  Delectable food from Seward Coop will make the whole evening even more wort-while. Don't forget to arrange a porter to help you get home. All proceeds benefit The Cedar--with thanks to Zipps for brewing this effervescent event! Sponsored by 90.3 and 106.7 KFAI.

First time you hear Tim Eriksen (7.30pm Thu 11/5) sing, his voice will likely make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up (in a good way). The former front person of Cordelia's Dad turned interpreter of classic New England murder ballads, shape note tunes and Appalachian songs has the likely unique honor of having shared stages with both Kurt Cobain and Doc Watson. His music was heard by a global audience with his contributions to the chilling soundtrack for the movie Cold Mountain. Sponsored by Radio Heartland

Its reunion time, and breaking up time, all in one night, when tunesmith Chris Koza (8pm Fri 11/6) not only headlines, but also brings back the delightful vocalist and violinist JoAnna James (now resident in California after many years in the Twin Cities), and provides the opportunity for one last performance for The Wars of 1812, who have decided to call it a day while they are still at the top of their game. Sponsored by 89.3 The Current

Sorry, tickets have now sold out for The Cedar and Walker Art Center presentation of The Mountain Goats with Final Fantasy (at The Cedar) (8pm Sat 11/7), drawing lots of attention in the wake of the Mountain Goats' ambitious biblically themed release The Life of the World to Come. Standing room only. Sponsored by 89.3 The Current and vita.mn

The community celebrates the life of Loren Kellen (5pm Sun 11/8), a long-time member of the Twin Cities puppet and mask theater community, who died from a heart attack on October 2.  More information about Loren’s remarkable life, the ceremony, and the Loren Kellen Memorial Fund, can be found at www.lorenkellen.com

Mr Chan presents the highly percussive, high energy sounds of White Rabbits (7.30pm Mon 11/9), along with Brooklyn duo Glass Ghost. Tickets for this show are available only from The Cedar Ticketline (612-338-2674 ext 2) and Ticketmaster. Standing room only. Sponsored by 89.3 The Current.

The Clash of the LegendsBilled as The Clash of The Legends, one hopes that Erin McKeown and Jill Sobule (7.30pm Tues 11/10) will fight fairly and squarely, and leave you richly entertained.  Both of these singer-songwriters have excellent new albums out: Erin's Hundreds of Lions on Ani's Righteous Babe label, and Jill's self-released and fan-funded California Years (produced by the highly respected Don Was).

Community Event
I thoroughly recommend the annual NE Accordion Festival, to be held this weekend, Nov 6 at the Eagles Club, and Nov 7 at NE Middle School. Check their website for details, and see if you can squeeze it in!

Upcoming events

That's all for this week. See you at The Cedar soon…and remember, bring a friend or three!

Hello, fellow music fans,

The sun was setting before I even left work yesterday, and I found myself day dreaming about warm weather destinations. But instead of pouting about the chill, I turned to The Cedar’s concert schedule – who needs vacay with all of this great live music? That’s the idea behind the current campaign, Cedar Staycation. The campaign raises money for The Cedar and saves you some cash, too. When you donate $50 or more, you’ll get 2-for-1 ticket prices at the door on select concert events like those listed below. Donate today at thecedar.org/donate.

And because we know you’re dying to staycation with us, we’ll give the first fifteen people who donate $50 or more two tickets to our fall beer tasting event tomorrow (Wednesday, Nov 4) at 6:30 pm at The Cedar (read more about it here). Click here thecedar.org/donate to donate.

My staycation got pretty good last week: I danced with indie darlings Thao and the The Get Down Stay Down, took a mental jaunt to Poland with the Warsaw Village Band, and got the blues BAD with the Homemade Jamz Blues Band. But enough about me: I want to hear about your staycation! Tell me in 250 words or less what you’ve been doing instead of going on vacation this year. The best story will win $250 towards Cedar ticket purchases. Email it to info@.... Don’t have a staycation story? Buy tickets here: thecedar.org/event and start yours today.

Thanks for helping out. See you at The Cedar,

David, Cedar Staycationer

Get 2-for-1 ticket prices on these concerts with a donation of $50 or more:

Buille Friday, November 13

Toshi Reagon with Chastity Brown Sunday, November 15

Vic Chesnutt with Liz Durrett Thursday, November 19

Harper Simon Tuesday, November 24

Mountain Heart Sunday, December 13

With more 2-for-1 concerts to be announced

"(Heartache & Stone) is Superb!'
  WQUB FM Radio

Hi Friends!

Still working on fall cleanup here in the Northland, but we've already
had to dance around a few early snow falls.  It hasn't been cold enough
for the snow to last, but we did have a couple good-sized snowmen in the
front yards-for a while anyway!

October was good to us this year. Following our shows at the Norsk
Hostfest in Minot ND, we crisscrossed Minnesota for the rest of the
month. In all, there were 14 concert appearances in October, and we all
made another house payment!

Feedback from deejays and media has been terrific for our new CD, Heartache & Stone:

"Monroe Crossing strikes again....Each and every song keeps you wanting
more... This is the best project to date. WE LOVED IT."
- Al Shusterman,
"Backroads Bluegrass," KCBL Sacramento CA

"...my pick for airplay is 'Patience.' Anybody who dismisses this song
after listening to it once needs to listen to it a second time."
- Don
Igoe, "Pickin' the Grass," WAPS-FM, Akron OH

"This is great music and vocals from a band that has obviously worked
hard to perfect the sound they produce."
Carl Anthony, "The Drive-In
Radio Show," KZUM, Lincoln NE

"Heartache and Stone, represents (Monroe Crossing's) best effort to date. Arrangements are fresh and creative....an enjoyable project loaded with a satisfaction." Louisville Music News

"This record has more heart than any half dozen other records you’re likely to encounter any time soon, and musicianship on a par with the best of the breed....Fuglie gets way on the inside of any song she sings, whether her own or others’, and above all else, the humanity and the sheer embrace of life she imparts when she sings, makes every song special, a unique journey of its own, and elevates the music of Monroe Crossing to an exalted plane."  Bluegrass Special by David McGee

Ahhhhh, the gales of November - grey sky month back home. But we'll start the month off at the Ranch Bluegrass Festival in Tyler TX, and then it's back to Minnesota and Iowa for the rest of the month.

We're very excited to announce a performance of "The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass" with the Muscatine Civic Chorale in Muscatine IA on Friday, Nov 20th!

Goblins and pumpkins, and before long, turkey and pumpkin pie. The
holidays are approaching, and we wish you all safe travels and good health!

This week's events
Please join us at The Cedar for our seasonal wine tasting put on by our friends at Zipp's (6.30pm Wed Oct 21), and raise a glass to The Cedar's 21st season, or perhaps just to celebrate having largely traversed hump day. Along with a truly mind-boggling selection of wines, there'll be some tasty nibbles, and a silent auction. All proceeds benefit The Cedar. Sponsored by vita.mn

If you attended the 2009 Square Lake Film & Music Festival, then you'll remember a massive thunderstorm closed down proceedings prematurely on August 15th. Relax: there's a second chance, as the Festival presents at The Cedar “Bring the Outside In” (7.30pm Thu Oct 22), which kicks off with experimental banjoist Paul Metzger, moves through a showcase  of about 20 local films, and concludes with the star of the show: the debut of International Novelty Gamelan’s original film score to The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) a feature length animated film by the German animator Lotte Reiniger. Check the Festival website for more information and to purchase tickets.

Like a cool breeze blowing through a stand of tall trees, the music of The Pines (8pm Fri Oct 23) has a calming quality even as it chills. Rooted in the country folk-blues tradition, yet with a modern edge that's hard to pin(e) down, tonight The Pines celebrate the release of Tremolo (Red House Records) with the help of good friends Spaghetti Western String Company, who conjure up some wide open soundscapes of their own. Sponsored by 89.3 The Current

Gustafer Yellowgold (11am Sat Oct 24) is a creation of earthling Morgan Taylor, but it's well worth suspending disbelief for an hour on a Saturday morning and entering the fantastic world of a little yellow creature from the sun who likes to make friends and jump on cakes. Wonderful Beatlesque pop melodies married to absurd lyrics and colorful graphics makes for a show genuinely enjoyable by youngsters, teens and adults alike. Target Family Series at The Cedar

Billing themselves as the original Jews with Horns, there should be no dilemma whether or not to see The Klezmatics (8pm Sun Oct 24) -- do it! While they may have started as a klezmer band, they certainly haven't stopped there, and include numerous musical influences such as Arab, African, Latin and Balkan rhythms, along with a hint of jazz and raw punk energy. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Sponsored by Radio Heartland

Sparse, somewhat melancholic music to wallow in when the Great Lake Swimmers step ashore (7.30pm Sun Oct 25). Fronted by Tony Dekker, this Ontario indie folk/rock group made a splash and the Canadian Polaris Prize short list with their 2009 release Lost Channels, which has a fuller sound than their breakthrough, early Neil Young-ish album Ongiara, but is no less beautiful.  Openers will be The Wooden Birds (featuring Andrew Kenny of American Analog Set).
Sponsored by vita.mn

Wrapping up a full week of events, a triple treat from Thao With The Get Down Stay Down, The Portland Cello Project, and David Shultz and the Skyline (7.30pm Tues Oct 27). Thao Nguyen's third and very recent release Know Better Learn Faster is a post-break-up masterpiece. Paste describes it as a "magnificent musical catharsis," or, as Thao herself says,  “A few of these [songs] are just straightforwardly sad.  Sometimes there’s not much room to mince words and music when you feel like shit.” Thao also recently released an album with the Portland Cello Project (and Justin Power), suggesting she's not letting the old breakup interfere with her intense creativity. This performance by PCP, as they are known in the trade, will feature six classically-trained cellists, and with a repertoire ranging from Bach to Arvo Pärt to Pantera, anything goes. Gentle singing and songwriting from David Shultz and the Skyline will set the stage for what promises to be an amazing night of music.

Looking ahead, don't be asleep at the wheel when Asleep at the Wheel roll up at The Cedar (Wed Oct 28). And a final heads-up: tickets are selling very strongly for the Halloween show by the spooky-good songwriters Loudon Wainwright III and Chris Smither, both of whom have new albums out. Get 'em early!

Upcoming events

That's all for this week. See you at The Cedar soon…and remember, bring a friend or three!
