Welcome to the forum.



There is no such thing as a DY96 laminate... You look around on eBay long enough

you

WILL see DY90s for sale with the Jacaranda laminated sides and backs. These are

terrific

guitars. More than worth what most folks pay for them used. Sometime in the late

70s

Alvarez Yairi stopped using Jacaranda for the DY90s and went to using Indian

Rosewood, a

nice substitute tonally, but not as lovely to look at as the Jacaranda...



Now as for DY96s...  They are QUITE RARE - talk around the campfire ranges on

how many

were actually made, maybe as low as 40, maybe as high as a little over 100. You

see

THOSE were made all by hand. The inlay detail on them is flat amazing and takes

quite a

long time to do. IF you found a DY96 for sale, IF, you would likely pay 2 1/2 to

3 times

(AND POSSIBLY MORE) for a DY96 than you would for a Jacaranda DY90 from the mid

to

late 70s...



I've said it a million times here, you would be hard pressed to tell which was

which side by

side - the DY96 IS a little nicer, but the price for admission is high. Start

saving your

money if you REALLY want a DY96. They ARE exemplary guitars.

I quite agree with Abalone Supreme, in fact that is close to the name listing

for the DY90, Super Abalone.  I have a 1976 with incredible Jacaranda, a flat

headstock and a three piece back.  I would play it against any guitar out

there.. Incredible look and sound.  And the price, oh yeah, $750.00 about 5

years ago from EBAY no less.... not bad.  Now, the Yairi I would love to get my

hands on is the DY-45, Japanese version, not the 45 that is sold here in the

states, that is not worth the money, but the true 45 on the japanese market is a

beauty....

I did look into getting a new one, but so expensive and not what I am used to

paying for Yairi guitars.  I have loved several DY 70s and then handed them down

to my sons.. WOW what great guitars they are... One of them will beat a D28 any

day.  I was not aware that the DY 45 (Japanese) and the DY 95 were the same.. I

will look into that.  But the old Japanese DY 45 are golden...

I believe the attraction to the high end Yairi's 4 to 5 years ago (and more) was

that you

could get a truly magnificent handmade guitar that sounded as good OR BETTER

than a

Martin D-45 without paying that dastardly high price. And the DY96s and Japanese

DY45s

are still very good values COMPARED to the D-45 Martin makes. I don't think

anyone who

has played or owned a DY96 would ever trade it for a Martin D-45.



Like very well built jazz archtops these DY96s and the Japanese DY45s are really

stellar

handmade instruments that do have a fairly hefty price tag. Thank goodness they

are not

as hefty as the Martin price - yet considering the extra inlay and time involved

are far

more attractive (in my mind).



Good luck on your hunt. And save as much money up as you can, just in case you

run

across one in person you might be convinced to lay down that extra money (and be

glad

you had the chance to grab the instrument while is was still available). Realize

there are a

lot of folks looking to get one - folks scouring eBay, GBase and countless

Japanese guitar

store websites constantly. If you have dealt with good used guitar stores some

will do

some "wish list" scouring of other sources they know of for you (these dealers

network A

LOT with each other).



But my point in all this is that buyers and dealers are far more aware of the

demand for

and value of these guitars today compared to say 5, 10, even 20 years ago. The

days of

finding a DY96 for sale for less than say $2500.00 American are pretty much in

the past,

even with the troubled state of the World Economy factored in. And ordering one

new from

Japan might be your fastest and possibly only way to owning one.

Most folks like the idea of getting a good deal on a AY, but can't overcome the

brand

prejudice they have for Martin, Gibson and Fender. They might be willing to buy

a high end

Martin and pay the high price - but aren't about to pay about half for a

comparable AY... A

shame.



By the way I just did my daily perusal of eBay and found a late 70s Japanese

YW800, which

is comparable to an American DY90. Laminated Jacaranda sides and back, and looks

to be

in great shape. I have seen this seller list a lot of similiar guitars over the

last year or so

and they seem to have a good rep. There surely are plenty of highly detailed

photos to go

along with the text too... So you would know what you are getting well in

advance.
