Subject: [yamaha-psr-styles] Fake Books/PDF format : IPAD, KINDLE, etc.

Hi Mike,

I've recently bought a KINDLE reader.  Cost me ~$110 including shipping, tax, and after a rebate.  I like it a lot.  I've only got public domain free stuff on it (mostly all pre-1922 (c) ).  I've put 500-600 "books" on it already (I say"books" because I've included a bunch of .pdf's).  I did put on a bunch of .pdf fakebooks as an experiment.  Page turns are much slower with .pdf than normal e-read stuff.  The .pdf music stuff is too small with using the built in magnifier -- but that brakes up the sheet into multiple pages which is impractical for use while you're playing.  One could, I believe, view a whole single page of music if you put some kind of large magnifier in front of the KINDLE (like what a dentist uses or what they put in front of small screen B/W TV's when they came out in the '40's).

All in all I'd say the KINDLE is probably not the greatest way of storing .pdf music for use when playing.  I'd much rather use one of my older PC laptops.  An old THINKPAD could probably be had for the same price as the Kindle.  I think it would work better for music.

Which is not to say I'm in any way disappointed with the Kindle.  Having a whole room of classic books at my bedside or in such a small elegant device is marvelous, even if it doesn't do the music sheets.

I suspect you'll find something similar with the IPAD.  Buy it if you want an IPAD.  If in fact it does do music (e.g., you can easily view single whole pages and turn/find stuff easily) sheet .pdf than that would be a plus.  But I wouldn't buy it (COST !!!) for that purpose alone.  For JUST the music I'd recommend the old PC notebook (which you could also load with .sty files, etc.).

Subject: [yamaha-psr-styles] Fake Books/PDF format

 Hi all,

I'm looking for a fake book,  Jazz and/or pop in PDF format.   I'm also thinking of purchasing an iPad.   I understand that the iPad can read music in PDF format and that it is very readable.  The pages turn easy using one finger.

Anyone have any experience with this.  It would be a great way to put your music in one location.

A lot of newbies still don't understand that .mid and .sty files do NOT contain "music".  The are NOT sound files.  What they do contain are instructions for a music maker (a PC, PSR, etc.) -- something which can make sounds after it receives instructions.  The .mid/.sty files are like the piano rolls on a player piano, or a 45 rpm recording.  They don't make the sounds, but contain "instructions" for the sound maker.  This explains why the PC and PSR sound different even if they have the same .sty/.mid file loaded.

Hi Rahim,ua
,
I'm not exactly sure what it is that you are asking.  The info about placing styles, mp3 files, MIDI files on a thumb drive then using those styles directly on your keyboard is absolutely correct.  This is the fastest and easiest way to do this.  Jorgen is also correct in saying that on the computer MIDI files won't sound the same.  We've been using Yamaha keyboards for a long time.  In that time they have matured wonderfully and produce incredible sound.  The drivers for the PC haven't kept up.  The sound the PC produces is greatly inferior.  There are two PC ports on the back of your keyboard.  One allows you to send and retrieve files directly from a thumb drive.  You can create, play, edit or retrieve several different types of files directly to or from the drive instantaneously and then share them with the world.  The other option is the USB to Host port and allows you to connect directly with your computer through a PC file called the MusicSoft Downloader.  This allows you to do two things and two things only.  1.  Download files from MusicSoft.  2. To transfer MIDI files to your keyboard and from your keyboard to  the computer.  I recently did this with a magnificent file I had created on a Roland several years ago, converted with MegaEnhancer and then tried to play on my S710.  The result was awful. MIDI just hasn't kept pace with us.

Arthur,

A vinyl recording is a scratch on tar where the needle rides through the scratch and sends the information to the internal decoder which in turn converts the movements of the needle into sound signals, which is then converted into electric signals that are then converted into sound signals in the speakers.  That's how a scratch on tar becomes music.

I'm sure there is information of this on Wiki and I don't need to be vague and ambiguious.  You can take a read there.

Hi Lincoln,

First, I do know how a vinyl recordings are produced and how sound is made from them, thank you very much though for your extensive reply, some of us may do not know this much.

Then, I've put a little bit of humor in my words. I thought so.

I'll try to be more precise and explain you why.

First physical recordings were using mechanical amplification but later 33 1/3 and 45 RPM recordings use the same basics : the actual waveform is molded into the wax/tar/vinyl. You could see it with a microscope, and possibly with a simple magnifying glass. A mix of Right and Left channels may use up/down and right/left shapes but physically, there is no other magic trick than (filtering and) amplifying the needle movements to loudspeakers. Without filtering, you *could* see loudspeaker move along with the pressure of your finger onto the needle.

There is no interpretation of the content. That is the point.

(Nowadays audio equipments embed digital electronics, even though they just play MP3 files. This is far away from a 45RPM technology simplicity, don't you think so ?)

Anyway, the point I wanted to show up is that Bob words were saying a 45RPM, as a piano roll, and midi files, only contains instructions on which notes to play.

45RPM *DO* contain the actual sound image representing the way it was actually recorded.

Any turntable, whichever brand it is, will let me hear John, Paul, Ringo and George singing and playing the same instruments.

The only difference would be in the quality, as any amplifier and loudspeaker set would be involved anyway.

An MP3 file, an AudioCD do not use the same physical techniques but they contain (at a more precise level) the actual sound image representing the way it was actually recorded, too.

At the opposite, a midi file needs a device to obey (as far as it can) to midi instructions in order to produce low voltage audio signals (that then would be amplified in the same way than any other audio equipment).

A given midi file will never be heard the same on a Yamaha, Ketron, Korg or a PC, and even worse if it uses specific XG SysEx messages.

Midi file content is interpreted and executed, well or badly, with (few or many) PCM samples or with synthesis, etc.

This is the point.

Lincoln, don't tell me you weren't joking.

Do you really agree with Bob ?

Am I living on Mars ?

By the way, I think original Rahim question was something like

"I got tons of style files on My PC, may I browse them directly from my PSR S900 in order to use them instantly without having to transfer a short selection with my PC management tools before I can play one of them on the PSR?"

Best regards,

Arthur.

Hi Bob,

I'm very sorry, from my point of view, it doesn't have sense either.

a Compact Disc holds a (very) close representation of the music (or whichever sound) originally recorded.

And, among popular supports, there is no closer one.

You may compare Piano Roll and Midi Files tou Music Sheet if you like, because there is an interpretation or a process that will radically change the sound before you hear it.

This is NOT recorded music.

for a CD, a 45RPM or similar music RECORDINGS, you hear (with few differencies) what was recorded.

Finally, I think I'm near Saturn or Uranus ... 8-[

Arthur.

Dear Alan,

Please pardon my delay in replying. Your email went to an account I rarely
access any more.

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to search for my old midi files. You
did indeed find the one I was missing. The lost sheep has finally been returned
to the fold!!

Kind regards,

Hi Bob and Frank

Yes I'm sorry but my Wife and I had to deal with three family bereavements and
all the problems of care, house sales, estate issues and the like and I'm afraid
my music interests took a back seat.  I got so far behind that I could not
catch up.  Then disaster struck, my PC crashed and whilst important data was
backed up I did lose some, particularly the group emails with songs attached.
It is a shame that Yahoo stopped storing the midi attachments for a period.

I do have some PSR Group songs stored on an external hard drive maybe If Frank
lets me know which one I might be lucky.

I have been following the group recently, hence picked up on this message.
..............
I've taken time out of writing this message and found all but 3 of Frank's midi
files for 2002 hope the one searched for is not one of these.  Have attached a
zip of the files that I do have. Good Luck.

Incidentally I do have a new email address - alanj808@...

Regards to you both

Alan Jackson

 Hi Frank,

Well, I recalled that we had a member who (must have been a trainspotter
or bird watcher too ;)    ) kept a meticulous record of all songs uploaded
(who, when, what, etc.).  I remembered he sent us summaries in .xls files, but
for the life of me I couldn't remember his name (I don't think we've heard from
him in a number of years....   So, I went to the group MESSAGES page and did a
search for .xls      Sure enough I found :
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/yamaha-psr-songs/message/29967   from
2003.  So your 2002 song would certainly have been in his files.  All this
reminded me that the fellow, if you can find him, who might have your song
saved is Alan Jackson.  His last known email was:

alanjacksonuk ajackson@...     Quite a nice fellow, as I recall, and
a fairly active member.  I hope he didn't meet with misfortune.....

             Cheers,

                    Bob

I seem to remember that an archive was maintained separately from the group
at...

http://home7.inet.tele.dk/js/musik/740pages/russ_frame2.htm

But that URL no longer funtions. I'm trying to locate a file I uploaded in 2002.
It appears I'm out of luck!

Hi Arthur,
Thanks very much for sending but the one I wanted is 'Merry Christmas Everyone'  by 'Shakin Stevens'

"Snow is fal-lin' all a-round me,
Child-ren play-ing hav-ing fun
It's the sea-son of love and un-der-stand-ing
Mer-ry Christ-mas ev'ry-one."

The one you kindly sent was 'Merry Christmas Everybody' by Slade.

Thanks for your trouble.

Regards

Vince

Vince,

I'm so sorry I made a confusion.

In fact, I ask Windows Search and it found ONE file.

I didn't even compare "everyone" to "everybody"

Don't be angry about me.

I just tried to help

I just hope other guys in the group won't believe I gave you the one you were searching for and stop searching themselves.

Regards,

Arthur.
