Description

A group for those of us using Yamaha's line of wonderful Black Box Modules.
We're talking TX802, TX81z, FB-01, PTX8, TX16w, TX(1d6)16, the humble Tx7, and the mighty and terrifying FVX-1.

Yamaha's time of ultimate Trogdorean Majesty was between 1984 and 1989, when everything came in a sturdy black box. All the buttons were square, and some of them had rectangular LEDs in them. There were more than ample jacks at the back, screens were big, backlit, and there were large red 7-Seg displays telling you from across the stage what was going on.

This group is a place for lively technical discussion about MIDI programming, internal specifications and modifications, updating your OS (by hook or by crook) and just general discussion and admiration of these machines.
The other topics of discussion are Yamaha DX series keyboards, and general ethics and aesthetics of [mostly] Yamaha gear.

These devices have stood the test of time, let us keep them alive!

How do you know if you own a YBB?
Is it black?
Do you need to plug something in to it for it to be any real use? Maybe some drum triggers, MIDI, or a breath controller?
Is it quite possibly heavier than it looks?
Could you hit it with a hammer and possibly break the hammer?

if you answered yes to 2 or more of these questions, you quite probably own a Yamaha Black Box.

Welcome to the fold!

Re: DX panel switches
Thanks to all for the leads. It looks like E-switch and Omron both make one that will work. Here is a page with a few varieties and good pricing:

Re: DX panel switches
Hi Grant, For the 4 leg switches I used Jameco 153251. There are data sheets available so you can check them for fit. I must have put over a hundred of these
