Julian, it's a Spanish version of the popular American cowboy song
"Ghost Riders in the Sky"! I particularly like Sagi-Vela (my favourite
singer) doing the equivalents of the "yippee-aye-ay" refrain!!

I recently acquired a Luis Sagi Vela record without a label, but it
contains various songs from zarzuelas. One track struck a chord with me
and I don't know the name of it. The opening line is, "En una noche
oscura de terrible tempestad."

I eventually bought the Vela CD "Grandes de Zarzuela" and the same aria
is track# 8 on that CD, but the disc list it as "Ramona" (which I know
is incorrect). I'd always heard this tune as a folk tune
called "Jinetes en el Cielo." Is this the correct zarzuela it is from?
Some search on the internet revealed a few hits listing the song as "La
ronda del vaquero." Any information provided would be greatly
appreciated.

Sincerest thanks,
Julian

The original English version of Andrew Lamb's extensive programme note
on "La generala", written for Emilio Sagi's new production at Madrid's
Teatro de la Zarzuela, is published on zarzuela.net by arrnagement with
the theatre. Our version (unlike the Spanish version in the programme)
features some intriguing graphic material, from the time of the original
1912 production.

There's also a "2007 CD review roundup" of zarzuela and other Spanish
music, including Manuel Sirera's 2nd zarzuela album, an interesting
double album of tonadillas and a "one-man zarzuela" by Manuel Garcia,
and two exhilarating collections from the Bilbao Accordion Orchestra
(for the zarzuela fan who thought they had everything!)

Pedro Gomez Manzanares has conducted some analysis of the requested
titles from the SGAE archive: what are the most popular zarzuelas? who
requests them? which countries are most interested?

His encouraging findings (particularly concerning an exponential rise in
interest from abroad) are published on ZARZUELA.NET this morning.

The Spanish version is at:

(one click at the bottom of the article takes you to the English
translation, or of course you can go direct to the English from the

Sad news today from Madrid: the sudden death of the leading young

new standards for Spanish musicology.

There is a full obit. at

The Zafiro CD issue is still around in Spanish shops, but online of
course is a difficult proposition. The genuine and respectable Montilla
company has not been active for some time, although a pirate company
trading under their name (and using their old logos) was prosecuted in
Miami a few years back.

The original company issued a few early CDs (such as the transfer of the
old 1950's "Cecilia Valdes" LP set under the composer, and several Cuban
and Kraus compilations) but many of the later issues - eventually
appearing under a spurious "Orfeon" label - were from the pirating
company. These latter are to be avoided, musically as well as morally:
at least two managed to reverse the (very badly transferred) A amd B
sides from the Luis Sagi-Vela LPs they were ripping off!!

None of this applies to "Eva", which is a good and legal transfer under
the excellent yellow-and-white ZAFIRO CD label.

They've put some videos on YouTube of the zarzuela "La viejecita"! I
sang the lead tenor role of Carlos/la viejecita, and my wife sang the
soprano role of Luisa. You're welcome to check them out. I'm not
sure they want us to put links on here, so I'll just tell you how to
find them. Enter "Christian Lindsey Elda" in the search box.

Just remember, we're not professionals (neither was the recording--the
mic was behind the conductor)! We're semi-professional amateurs at

Thank you for taking that trouble, Fernando. And very good luck with the
remaining performances!

All attachments to discussion group mails are set to be stripped out,
for reasons of safety which I'm sure members will appreciate. If this is
not done, there is always a danger of scammers publishing virally
infected files (though in fact the new entry system seems to be working
well to exclude them).

As a principle of "netiquette" for Yahoo Groups, quite a number of
members are still not on broadband, and so do not wish to have to
download mails containing some (potentially very large) attachments.

Nice to hear from you too. Here busy as always.
My brother has two zarzuela selections in youtube, "La dulce quimera" from
Cecilia Valdes and La salida de Juan from "Los gavilanes" he San them at two
concerts last year one of them "Cecilia" with Alina Sanchez. You can search
for Rodolfo Cutino. He got an standing ovation. As you can hear his voice is
more mature.
A friend of ours is becoming an international opera star, Her name is
Eglise Gutierrez, she just performed La Viuda Alegre here, but she sang
Cecilia years ago and in some zarzuela concerts in Grateli. She has opera
selections in you tube.

I don't know what happened where you are, but Doña F. started at 2000 French
time on France Musique and ran to about 2215; it was followed by the
Domingo/Bayo recording of La Verbena. I heard the whole thing in Canada from
1400 to 1700 EST.

I am listening to Radio France (9.00 pm BST) but hearing La Verbena de la
Paloma. What happened to Dona Francisquita? Unfortunately I missed all
opening announcements. At the suggested time I heard a soprano singing
   Berlioz!

Hello, Basilio. Thanks for this good news about the Doña Francisquita
broadcast.

I tuned in at 17:00 GMT Saturday and they were playing Chopin on the links you
gave.

I checked the France Musique site and it seems that the broadcast is scheduled
for 20:00 local time in France, which I believe is 2:00 pm US Eastern Daylight
Saving Time, not 1:00 pm.
