Anil,
I saw/heard them at Birdland in Vienna.
Lineup was Paco Sery on drums, Allegre on guitar, Aziz on voc and percussion, a guy from Sengal on percussion (he had played in Germany with the Syndicate in 1996), a keyboarder and sax player from Paris, (can`t remember their names). You should google for the "Z Syndicate". Bassplayer was new for me as well. Also Sabine was listed for a concert at Innsbruck but was not on stage in Vienna.
(I am on a very slow connection here deeply in the alps so pls look for the details in the net.)
They played mostly Zawinul/Weather Report material, some other stuff as well. I liked it a lot. It DID work. Thank god nobody was emulating Joe. Not too bad to have a sopranosax again, though a lttle less might have been more. Young energy all over the place and Paco holding everything together.
A lot of fire and a lot of smiles on player`s faces.
I ran into Erich and
he said the process of digitizing those many many Cassettes with Joes music is a major task.
According to Allegre we might hear them play "new" Zawinul music in the future.
"Frau Zinke", Joes manager, is involved with the "Z Syndicate" as well, in fact thw guitar player called her "our mama".
Also a CD (one, not a box) of Zawinul Syndicate live and a DVD (the Lugano 2007 concert) should be out in September 2008.

Not talking about The Zawinul Syndicate, but The Z Syndicate, the tribute
band to Joe featuring former members of Zawinul's original band. It toured
Austria earlier this year.
